Fortunately, the previous post proved to be wrong!

    Here's an injury update (1/9/2017):

From the Hawke's Bay Saracens Facebook page:

A couple of changes to today's line up - Jorian Tangaere and Dan Snee have been brought into the Magpie squad, and out of today's Saracens lineup.

So it looks like Dixon and West are in doubt for Wednesday's game ...

    Injury update 6/9/2017:

    0_1504663587196_121b6cef-cbd8-4697-89e3-d4b4df6ebb1d-image.png

    From today's HBT:

Philpott pointed out none of the 13 players on his injury list have season-ending injuries.
"That is a positive and the guys who are filling their jerseys know they can create selection issues. Those who wore them previously don't just get them back automatically."

I only have 11 players on the list (having moved Wilson back on the list without further confirmation that he has indeed recovered earlier than expected). Don't know for sure who the 12th and 13th players are, but there aren't many players left. They have to be TJ Vaega and Pasqualle Dunn, unless they are counting guys from the Saracens squad.

Edit: had to edit the list because I had overlooked Selesele being named on the bench.

That's an interesting comment from Mr. Philpott. Clearly there are selection issues with the number of injuries, most likely finding someone who is available and can take a couple of days of work rather than anything else. Given the way our guys are dropping like flies I suspect the bus driver must be under serious consideration to strip and sit on the reserve bench.

The last sentence is a hint that there might be new players on the radar to come in late and take the place of some of the contracted players even though they might have recovered from their injuries. Sadly I too am carrying a left arm injury that is season ending so I won't be under consideration!

@Higgins Haha, they should just send the guys to the gym who have (relatively) recently retired and get them back to fitness. Thinking of former Magpies like Karl Lowe, Jason Shoemark, Dan Waenga. Is Taumalolo still in France?

Or they may be desperately waiting for the school rugby season to end this weekend, although many of those Hastings Boys will end up in the NZ Schools squad.

    Bloody hell

Another four players were added to the Magpies lengthy injury list after tonight's 40-27 loss to the Wellington Lions in the capital.

Thirteen players were unavailable for the match and after the final whistle Magpies head coach Craig Philpott learnt lock Geoff Cridge and Tony Lamborn won't be available for Sunday's match against Otago in Napier after failing head checks. Flanker Lucas Goodin collected a shoulder injury and prop Jason Long collected a knock.

"We're particularly desperate for loosies as Ben Hamelink was concussed when playing for the Saracens last weekend too," Philpott said.

@Stargazer In all seriousness though is Karl Lowe injured or something? He has been still playing top level and is now back in the bay. Surprised he wasn't selected anyway. Need to call Trent back up and tell him to cut his OE down and come back and play. Shoemark I reckon could still get the vocal cords on full bore with a last minute try or assist. How nice would a buckman/shoemark/emerson(or Mcnicol) 12/13/Wing be.
Can't see Dan unretiring after retiring from head knocks. Maybe bring Adam Brady back in as utility bench spot covering 6-15

The answer to your question on Karl Lowe is both "injured" and "something". He returned late May but couldn't play any club rugby until his French contract expired end June. He only played three games for Clive (including semi and final) getting injured after the first.

It was stated he wasn't picked in the squad because at that moment he had only played the two games (the semi and final) after his month off with injury. As he is not playing for the Dev team, he currently hasn't played since the Maddison Trophy final on 5 August.

Trent Boswell-Wakefield left after Tech's match v NOB Marist on 22 April.

Jason Shoemark has not played any club rugby last two years.

Adam Bradey played no club rugby this year.

It's unclear whether Farrell is still injured. He may be playing for the U19s in Taupo tomorrow.

    Injury update 16 September:

It's starting to look a bit better, but still a ridiculously long list.
Goodin, Parsons and Tangaere are back playing for the HB Saracens, and so is Pasqualle Dunn.

We are doing it rather nicely, just a shame that it is not 2017. I was a bit late tuning in and am struggling to recall the guy playing fullback for us. Nisbo and Mex are saying something like Bacher but I am at a complete loss as to who he was. Can someone help me out please?

One thing that is noticeable is that the ball seems to come out of rucks and mauls rather quickly compared to nowadays, also scrums did not take an eternity to set, reset and reset yet again. In fact the overall pace and continuity of play seems to be higher than what we get now. The HB crowd also nice and vocal supporting our team and not afraid to signal their displeasure when poor or missed calls go against the good guys.

Thanks for filling in the gaps but I still struggling to recall Ben Batger. Did he distinguish himself with us or any Australian team or was he another Luke Rooney?

It was sure a tonic to flagging spirits to see us putting in such a decent spirited display. Probably in the days of Tom Coventry and Peter Russell's stewardship or was it a year before they were in charge? Anyway I hope Mr. Bishop (he of "Craig Philpott can take us to the next level" fame) was watching. Both teams had a number of fine players in their lineups bringing back some nostalgic memories.
Final score for those that need reminding Hawkes Bay 35 - 25 North Harbour

2007 was Ben Batger's only year for Hawke's Bay.

The appointment, or non-appointment, of the Magpies coach is a Board decision only. It is in the HBRU Constitution. It is not an appointment made by the CEO.

One of the Board members (he is not on the Board now) who made the decision in 2011 to replace Peter Russell with Craig Philpott, told me a couple of years ago that another contender on the shortlist was Kevin Schuler, who shortly after, got the Bay of Plenty coaching job for 2012.

It was Russell's first year in charge of the Magpies.

Wikipedia tells me that 2007 was our best year in the NPC ever; we reached (and lost) the semi-finals.

Regardless of who made the decision it was Mr. Bishop that made the famous "next level" statement. In hindsight I guess we can count ourselves a bit lucky dodging the Kevin Schuler bullet but the Board's eventual appointment has caused some of us a great deal of angst, with the negatives comfortably outweighing the positives, in my eyes anyway. I guess it is easier to remember the bad times than the good times just like you don't often remember the lucky calls you get but you sure as hell remember and resent the bad calls that come your way!
