Have tried a couple to date and was wondering whether others had suggestions:<br />
<br />
SlimWhey - designed for the low-carb market I picked some up as it was half price. Mocha flavour was alright, and easy to mix with milk or water. High protein, being about 73% from memory, but believe they've gone out of business in Australia and are no longer distributed. Bugger<br />
<br />
Aussie Bodies' "Perfect Protein" - this one is utter shit. Protein content is good at 75.4% but it just won't dissolve sufficiently in milk OR water. Tastes like crap as well and I'm sorry I paid full price for it. Am consuming it with haste so I can move onto something else.<br />
<br />
<br />
I also saw some of the Atkins' Advantage stuff which is for the carb-free freaks among us. Watch out for this stuff as it has a fat content of close to 45%!!!!

Glad someone bought these up. I was using protein shakes for a few months, but quit because it was too expensive. I honestly can't say whether it was doing anything or not. For all I know I was using it wrong. Sometimes it feels like you need another bloody degree to practice good nutrition. There are so many differing views out there, and it seems to get pretty complicated.<br />
<br />
I was looking to lose weight, and wouldn't have said no to more muscle mass. I was recommended protein shakes as, amoung other reasons, apparently it helps muscle repair and growth.<br />
<br />
Anyone got any views on how necessary and helpful protein shakes are?<br />
<br />
PS. I was using Devine Protein, and while I don't know how effective it was, it mixed really bloody well and tasted really good.

Milk - for me its a matter of making sure my diet has enough protein to do the muscle repair and enhancement stuff as the more lean muscle mass you have, generally the faster your metabolism is (provided you're using it)<br />
<br />
But also very important is holding back cravings. If you eat sufficient protein you're unlikely to snack or end up eating foods which are high in carbs and more readily available that seriously proteinous stuff. One theory is you should have about 30% protein in your diet but as you said - those shakes can get bloody expensive....<br />
<br />
Also watch out for the body builder supplements - they are usually carb-loaded in addition to protein and unless you're pumping serious iron you may not get a lot out of it.

I have used a couple over the years.  I need to otherwise I end up losing weight.<br />
<br />
if you are trying to lose weight I'd suggest limiting the extra protein intake in your diet.  A well balanced diet will fulfill most prerequisites and body needs.<br />
<br />
However, the best ones i have found are:<br />
<br />
ASN (currently using) - Have found this really good and have added about 3kg in the last seven weeks.  I am also on creatine though so some of that gain will be water retention.  Tastes ok and mixes well.  I add banana and berries to the shake in the morning and generally have a few berries with it in the evening as well.  I also use their creatine and think it is the best I have used as it disolves easily, tastes ok (as much as that satuff can) and I am really feeling the affects from it.<br />
<br />
Aussie Bodies - I really like these guys Protein FX bars.  Good for a snack on the run or when you don't have the facilities to make a good shake.  really easy to get at most supermarkets as well.  Agree that their protein powder is rubbish.  <br />
<br />
EAS - haven't used their stuff for a whil but used it religiously when I used to do track.  Always good quality and very popular with sports people.

They do sell them in boxes on the Aussie Bodies website (aussiebodies.com.au) but it is out of order at the moment.  The online store that is.<br />
<br />
They are certainly not cheap.

Dragging up this old tread again...<br />
<br />
Longer distance running makes you lose muscle mass right?<br />
If so, would protein shakes help keep it on?<br />
If anyone's got some insight that would be great.<br />
<br />
I'm thinking of doing a half marathon in August and have to start training.

Well protein is for muscles generally Milk, as well as being an energy source, so it couldn't hurt.

I was talking to some guy at the gym who rated fat mobilisers or something similar. Said it was quite good for improving definition.<br />
Any one had any experience with those?

He couldn't remember what it was called, but he said it was herbal (apparently), and helped increase the amount of fat cells you burnt. I think there quite common.

If you go into a health food/vitamin shop they should have something nicknamed "Cuts" which supposedly prevents fat from being digested as well as encouraging your body to metabolise it as the first energy source. I tried it in my youth but didn't notice a difference really, though you may get different results.

Here's some<br />

Thermo DynamX actually works by increasing your body’s metabolism so you burn more calories. It acts on the receptors that determine metabolic rate and temperature and amps them up so that you not only burn more energy while you exercise, you'll burn fat while you go about your normal day to day activities! It truly is your 'total body transformation solution' and results are guaranteed.

Redbak and Musashi are my favourite.  Only because they taste best and dissolve best in water.  <br />
<br />
Agree with NTA about Perfect Protein..mostly drinking clumps of powder with milk.

Not really a protein shake and I'm not sure if it's available in NZ or OZ but Nutrilet is what I drink. It's high in protein and low in fat so is perfect for the fatties. Personally I think it tastes good and is excellent to have if I'm feeling peckish.

They will probably have something similar Rancid - can you post up the profile of the drink (protein, fat and carbs per 100g) and manufacturer? Might also be worth listing ingredients if you could....

No probs. It's in Norwegian but pretty easy to read:  http://www.nutrilett.no/sw3461.asp<br />
<br />
Just read an article where they're planning to launch it in AUS through a company called Faulding. Not sure if that helps.
