I think that the Hastings Boys guys can be proud, snubbed like Ma'a by the Hammetuer.

TO think, those Hastings boys would have only be 9 or 10 years old when Hammett began as Haurricanes coach in 2011. Where as members of the Rotorua 1st XV would have been about 15 years old back then.

Interesting that after the Maori team (all players who were left out of the NZSS and Barbarians teams in favor of foreign players) after beating Fiji Schools and the Barbarians last year, the 2019 Maori team is tasked with playing in a "game of three halves" against the NZSS and Barbarians teams. A rugby know-it-all at work didn't think that was strange at all - But then again he's a bit slow in the face.

*Foreign Players - Players who, like the "red sea" if their own countries were playing against the ABs or Kiwis, they'd be supporting their actual countries and and staying true to their true colors (not black)

I've been away so won't be trawling through the thread but the Top 4 doesn't mean a lot for NZ Schools selection, as the majority of the squad weren't even there. As an example, the only Hamilton BHS player (Green) selected was injured so wasn't in Palmy, and CBHS has 3 players but couldn't beat Nelson.

From what I have been told team is pretty much selected before then and the Super U18s competition is also important in identifying the talent and seeing how the players perform in that environment. You could argue that St Kents is still the school to go to for higher recognition. I believe there is also an unofficial rule where Yr 11 players aren't selected as they have 2 more years of eligibility. Quite a few players from the 2018 NZ Barbarians team have graduated to the 2019 NZS squad.

That, in itself, is a worry, considering the 2018 NZ Schools Barbarians squad was beaten by both Fiji Schools and NZ Maori U18, last year. Hopefully, these players have improved a lot since then.

@Stargazer It may also suggest the younger players are selected for the NZ Baabaas first. Zach Gallagher, the lock the Cantabs have talked up, is one of those players.

Disappointing that there is so little publicity being given to the schools teams, this year. I guess part of that is due to the RWC, although the lack of news and livestreaming of the U19s tournament by NZR may also point at cost-cutting or other reasons.

Anyway, today, New Zealand Māori U18 play Fiji Schools at Rotorua Boys High School. Kick-off 2pm.

    This is from Māori TV:

@Bovidae The kid is a beast. You don’t see many 17 yr old white kids as big as him. Be interesting to see who starts at 1st five. Ollie Lewis is a great player but I think Aidan Morgan may be better

@chchfanatic Is he bigger than Josh Lord and Sam Darry?

It's hard to know who starts if you aren't familiar with all of the players and their positions. Based on last year's team Segner should be at 7, Kneepkens and Wrampling on the wings, and Murray at fullback. Grindlay will be in the midfield.

    @Stargazer

I didn't even know they were playing most of the games in Hamilton. Good that they are showing the games on Sep 30 and Oct 4 live on SS1. I'll be on scoreboard duty for the games at HBHS. I hope the weather forecast improves. 😲

@Bovidae The communication by NZR about these games has been very poor again. I hope they can be bothered to publish team lists.

@Bovidae They have now one category of news for NZU20, U19s and NZ school teams: "age grade news"

    News

    News

The greatest loss is the complete archive of news articles. Nothing goes back further than 2018.
