Anyone else keeping an eye on Eliud trying to run sub-two hours in Vienna (live right now on Sky).

Being very carefully paced - but a cool watch.

Thanks @booboo , I also discovered it steaming live on the official website.

Just amazing how they bounce along at sub-3min/kms

@voodoo 24km completed and he's 9 seconds ahead of schedule. Just had a bit of a rough patch though he's come out of it.

They've got teams of eight runners pacing him through each 5kms - a car with green laser lights shining on the road in front of the runners doing something (possibly just looking cool) - and the whole thing sponsored by Ineos (they've just interviewed Chris Froome on the sidelines.

Will it be considered a world record?

The perfect v formation in front of him at all times surely must invalidate it if so?

    Still a phenomenal achievement tho! 2:50 p/km ... farkkkkk!!!!!

@MajorRage I think it's sort of like Bannister's sub-four minute mile - he'll be the first to do it.

Edit: and answer to your question - no idea! 🙂

I think it should count . Drafting teammates is commonplace, this is just a bit more organised. The green looks flash, but it's offering nothing more than a watch can - though interesting that bone of the athletes are wearing one, every gram of weight counts!

Edit: I've just seen there are teams of pacers, that's def a massive advantage. Changed my mind, shouldn't be a WR

Doesn't count as world record. But an amazing achievement. I couldn't keep that pace up for 120 seconds, let alone 120 minutes

@Machpants yeah if I tried for a 3min/km right now I'd snap a hammy and pull a calf inside 45 seconds.

According to that ABC Grandstand piece I heard (think it was Quentin Hull?) it won't be world record. But still amazing.

This ups his appearance fee to run in the Berlin, London, Paris or New York marathons in the hope he might run sub-two hours there.
