    How did Read get a nomination this year? Seems more like a career performance nomination (like Pacino for Scent of a Woman).

    Yeah, I'm surprised NZR nominated them. Ardie I could understand.

    I don't expect either to make the finalists.

    Rugby players/teams/coaches don't win Halberg Awards often, do they?

    @Stargazer

    ABs have won seven of a possible 32. The next best have three (the Evers-Swindell twins, Bond-Murray and Team New Zealand). Auckland's npc team also won it once.

    @Stargazer
    The Halbergs tend to favour Olympic sports, World Champions (ABs, Silver Ferns, etc) and Americas Cup winners.

    ABs aren't anywhere near World Champions ATM!

    Hope it's Adesanya/Bareman. Love Kane but he isn't a world champ.

    It's good to see that the ABs weren't rolled out just because. TJ's try was fooking amazing but that's about it from last year. I could see Razor in as coach of the year, the threepeat pretty special, maybe even team. They'll be well on when they probably do it again this year

    @Machpants I think only teams & individual sportsmen/women/coaches that represent NZ can be nominated for a Halberg Award.

    Would have been a ballsy move to nominate her/him/them.

    I thought the criteria was impact on the world stage. I could be wrong though.

    Regardless, a good season in a minor regional competition doesn't cut it for me.

    If it was F1 or Indycars he'd have a shot.

    An interesting and informative read about the politics of the Halbergs.

    I love the Halbergs, for better or for worse. That was a very interesting article and while Romanos clearly has his own agenda with that piece, it would be very interesting to know more about why they went from panel decisions to secret ballot. I can understand the reasoning for the secret ballot (that article makes a reasonably good case actually, since its basically all people lobbying for their pet favourites).

    But at the end of the day, it's great way to raise money for a good cause and celebrate NZ's sporting success, and we probably shouldn't worry too much as the inevitable wierd decisions come out from time to time. Comparing sports is a thankless chore and there will inevitably be guys who are long term legends but always get beaten out by guys who have a single spectacular year. Perhaps they should add an award for sustained performance (say best over the last five years) but that brings its own pitfalls.

    I recall back in the day Brendan Telfer talking (pontificating ?) about the change.

    He was a contemporary on the panel with Romania apparently.

    I seem to recall he mentioned some of the sports stars felt "bullied" in the panel discussion so got it changed. (I got the impression he felt they were being a but precious. Perhaps "triggered" may be the word we'd use today.)

    But from the description in the article you can see how that would work if you went in with preconceived preferences and they got challenged by fact and logic.
