Aren't they all now? It is also shit.

Sevens is fickle (and lots of competitive teams these days) so losing one pool game and being out of contention sucks. I actually didn't bother watching over the weekend for the first time in many years. The format must have been done by the same guy that gave us super rugby recently.

I don't think so, but I haven't seen the draw, yet.

I looked for the draw but couldn’t find it either. They usually do it at the tournament before don’t they?

@Snowy Usually soon after the previous tournament, so I expect it some time this week.

    Yay.

Do we assume the girls aren't playing (especially given they've already played in the States in Glendale).

@booboo Yes, the next two tournaments - Los Angeles and Vancouver (7-8 March) - are only played in the men's Series.

The women play again in Hong Kong (3-5 April), which is a combined tournament.

From what I read WR is concerned about sustaining fan interest for a 3-day combined event so I think you are only going to see those for marquee tournaments like Dubai and HK in the future.

@Machpants Extra teams? There's one invitational team at every tournament. Or wasn't that what you meant?

    Invitational teams:
    Glendale (women): Japan
    Dubai (men): Japan
    Dubai (women): Japan
    Cape Town (men): Japan
    Capet Town (women): South Africa
Hamilton (men): Japan (it was supposed to be Tonga initially)
    Hamilton (women): China
    Sydney (men): Japan (initially: Tonga)
    Sydney (women): Japan
    LA (men): South Korea

@Stargazer by extra teams I read that as 32 teams (16 men, 16 women) instead of just 16.

@booboo Hmmm, combined events (16 men's teams and 12 women's teams) aren't always played over three days.

Of the combined tournaments, the Hamilton, Sydney and Paris tournaments are played over two days, while the Dubai, Cape Town and Hong Kong tournaments are three day events.

Nah Hong Kong used to be 20 men's teams not 16, and worth more points than the other rounds. Maybe that's changed?

@Machpants I can't remember Hong Kong having had more than the core teams + one invitational teams at all. I know there has often been a separate tournament in the same week and that's not different now, but that's not in the same tournament.

The separate tournament involves second tier teams playing for a spot in next year's World Series (one team replacing the core team that drops out at the end of the current season). This year, for the first time, this second tier tournament is preceeded by two Challenger series to be held in South America.

"The Hong Kong Sevens is the sport's most prestigious annual rugby sevens event organised as part of the World Rugby Sevens Series. Historically, it had been contested by 24 teams; all other World Series tournaments had 16 teams participating until the 2012–13 edition. The teams are divided into six pools of four teams, who play a round-robin within the pool. The winning team of the tournament acquires 30 points towards its rankings in the World Series instead of the normal 22, and the runner-up earns 25 points instead of the normal 19. Through the 2008–09 World Series, the Hong Kong Sevens awarded 24 points to the runner-up, and 16-team events offered only 20 points for the winner and 16 for the runner-up."

    Was a while ago tho
