Well I have decided to again get rid of the excess kgs. About 3 years ago I did the Atkins diet for just under a year and lost 32 kgs that was combined with exercise.<br />
<br />
Then went on a 6 week Europe tour involving lots of alcohol and food and then returned home and couldn't be arsed exercising and got back into bad eating habits. Hence almost got back to the old weight.<br />
<br />
So for a new year I have decided to try again to get the weight off. Will be using Atkins again as it worked for me the 1st time and will combine with exercise

Atkins is a pretty unhealthy way to lose weight. Your goal should be to be healthy, as well as thinner.

Atkins is done properly is not that unhealthy. Have done a lot of reading on it. <br />
<br />
What is unhealthy is to just done the induction stage non-stop which is about the only part most people read about.

If you take it to the extreme and eat "as much fat as you like" as per the way some people read the Atkins diet, then its quite bad for you. Basically its elimination of carbs and lower threshholds on fat...

Not what I have read. Supposed to take ten years off your life if you stay on it, not to mention the strain on your kidneys.

Any DIET is bad, as you go on it, lose weight, and then gain it when you stop doing the 'diet'.  As you proved Stoli.  So don't diet - change your whole bloody liefstyle and eating habits of a lifetime - that'll do it.

I agree to certain extent but as NTA says stopping the exercise was the biggest mistake along with coming off Atkins completely to allow myself to enjoy the travel. What I should have done was work my way off by introducing carbs slowly till i found my point of equilibrium at which stage I would know what I could do to maintain a [ro[er balance going forward.<br />
<br />
That is what was supposed to happen it just didn't in my case this time I will finish it off properly. Along with the fact there is now low carb beers which will make the whole process much more pleasant

My flatmate when I was at uni was a pretty big guy, he went on the atkins diet basically because he didnt wanna cut bacon etc out of his diet. When we used to have bbq's he'd pull out a fat slab of steak or have burger patties wrapped between lettuce, and eat bacon and eggs for breakfast etc and he still lost 10kg. He piled the weight back on pretty quickly once he let carbs back into his diet. He reckoned he also had fuck all energy because he was never eating any proper fuel. <br />
<br />
Didnt atkins die of a heart attack last year?

He died I think the year before from a blow to the head when he slipped on ice outside his NY house. We he died later in hospital from complications from that

Fair enough, the media love to beat up these types of deaths. All the best with your challenge anyways!

You'd be in a world of hurt because your job requires so much energy. Take away carbs and work like that and you'll pass out.

Yeah that's true Paj - you'd be weaker than a kitten without your sugar, grains and rice.

nah you come right after a few days when your body starts processing food differently.<br />
<br />
I'm in the Stoli camp - i lost about 20kgs on Atkins, it was all good and i didn't even follow it that 'extremely'.  Never put the weight back on either.<br />
<br />
and it's not unhealthy, in fact, the whole point of Atkins is to eat natural non processed food - the same food the human body has been eating for millions of years.  Only been the last few years when all this processed crap came along that the body just can't deal with.<br />
<br />
and kirwin being a fat cnut is heaps worse than eating this diet short term.  Lose weight to excercise not exercise to lose weight i reckon.  Get the weight down first otherwise you get heaps of other shit going wrong with your body such as knees etc and it's no fun.

This is a pretty fair review of the effectiveness of the diet;<br />
<br />
http://www.bupa.co.uk/health_informatio ... 3diet.html<br />
<br />
The main documented risks of Atkins is the damage to kidneys and bone strength, but this article suggests it increases the risk of some cancers also.<br />
<br />
From a weight loss point of view, the worst thing the article notes is that the diet targets muscle over fat. That makes it harder to maintain any weight loss. As for your weight loss, you're cycling like a bastard aren't you? Also, the reverse Heathrow injection? <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':rolleyes:' />
