SA Rugby welcomes news on resumption of playing
SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux welcomed the news from the South African Government that rugby has been given the green light to return to the playing field, under certain conditions. The news was gazetted by Mr Nathi Mthethwa, the Minister for Sports, Arts and Culture, on Thursday. It allows for a return to competitive action subject to compliance with measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The directions stipulate that contact training, and matches can be played in empty stadiums, with only limited people allowed to attend games as part of essential services to make these events possible and from within a “bio safe environment”.“Having said that, our eight franchise teams that returned to the training field recently still need a few more weeks of preparation before they will be ready for matches, and from SA Rugby’s side we will assist them with whatever is necessary. “At this stage, we hope to have our first matches by early to mid-September and our plans on the structure of the planned competition will be announced in due course, as we have various options to consider.” The Vodacom Bulls, Emirates Lions, Cell C Sharks, DHL Stormers, Toyota Cheetahs, Southern Kings, Tafel Lager Griquas and Phakisa Pumas all started with non-contact training a few weeks ago. The return to international competition is not permitted under the new regulations, but Roux said he understood the Government’s need to phase any return to normality. -

Two tournaments for domestic return?
Vodacom Bulls director of rugby Jake White has revealed what the structure of the South African domestic tournaments could be when rugby resumes later this year. On Thursday, the South African government gave rugby the green light to return to the playing field under certain conditions. It allows for a return to competitive action subject to compliance with measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Jurie Roux has confirmed SA Rugby hopes to play its first domestic matches by early to mid-September, although the return to international competition is not yet permitted under the new regulations. In a digital press conference on Thursday, White revealed he had heard that a strength vs strength tournament involving the South African Vodacom Super Rugby teams will take place before an eight-team single-round Currie Cup. This means that the Springboks would return to rugby in the six-week domestic Super Rugby competition, before departing for New Zealand to prepare for the Rugby Championship. The South Africa Super Rugby and Pro14 would then be without their Springboks for a Currie Cup competition with the Pumas and Griquas, held over eight weeks. ‘The talk is that one bio-bubble will be the Super Rugby one and the other will be the Pro14 and Currie Cup,’ White said. ‘If that were the case, after we’ve completed the Super Rugby rounds, we’ll change over when the Springboks leave [for the Rugby Championship in New Zealand]. ‘Then there’s almost an advantage for the other teams to play against a Super Rugby franchise without their national players,’ White added. ‘That could make for quite an interesting Currie Cup. ‘I don’t think it’s a bad idea. It’s obviously not great if you lose half your team to the Springboks but I suppose if you’re a so-called smaller union then it’s quite a nice thought. You get a crack against all the big teams.’ -

Despite the sheer euphoria of assembling again in small groups, South Africa's rugby players will need to be content with at least one more week of non-contact training. Sport24 understands that SA Rugby's Covid-19 management committee will only convene on Monday, where protocols related to the resumption of contact training is expected to be given. More importantly, the meeting should also provide confirmation on the exact dates for the start of the domestic programme, which is reportedly going to be divided into a six-week Super Rugby-franchise only section and then an eight-week Currie Cup format. Earlier this month, SA Rugby stated that it was aiming for a "mid-September" return to play, with the weekend of the 12th appearing a suitable date. -
