Into the last stages of shaking a phlegm-based illness, so I decided to go for a run/walk tonight. Covered about 2km and coughed up a heap of chunky yellow crap. Followed it up with some pushups and crunches when I got home. Running sucks - I'm rolling my right heel in for some reason. Might see a chiropractor about my "alignment". Worked wonders for Little Aussie...

Yep same!, best thing for weight loss, catch some stomach bug and spend a week on the toilet, or puke it up <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

OK, after a "discussion" with Mrs TA over family time**, I'm planning to go to rugby training tonight :shifty: I have to leave work a bit early to make it but at this stage will commit only to training nights (i.e. live tackle bag) and helping out at the games.

**Getting a full Saturday afternoon off is a difficult request to make of a pregnant woman with a toddler I've found... Consequences have been outlined. Subtle threats have been made...

With the blessing grudging acceptance of the Minister for Finance and Entertainment, I went to training tonight with the local side. Good workout and I'm starting to cough up crap out of my lungs as they contract in the cold night air. Always a good sign <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Lots of Kiwis playing for the team, which is unsurprising when you look at the demographic of my surrounding suburbs <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> One big bloke in particular plays 8 for the firsts, he's wiry as, and bloody fast! No wonder he's got so many tries (current leading try- and points-scorer).... He also runs some of the coaching - I was holding the tackle bag when he was doing a demo, and I'm certainly glad he's on my side :shifty:

Warmed up with a game of touch footy (no tries for yours truly <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />), then a discussion by the president (a former Fijian international) and team manager about the performance last week. :shifty: Apparently there were three yellow cards and one red card awarded against the team, and the president wasn't too pleased, pointing out the fact that the club cops fines when red cards are handed out, and that if too many happen then the club committee have to front the judiciary panel to justify the club's ongoing existence etc. etc. The ref said after the game he was very close to calling it off!! And I know for a fact that MvJ has called off a game due to violence.

Side note: the Suburban Rugby Union in Sydney is one of the largest centrally administered competitions going, with 6 divisions. Your division is essentially based on the number of teams you can field rather than your skill level, but winning teams attract winning players and generally have more money as a result. While the top two or three divisions churn out some fairly competitive rugby, the lower divisions still have a very bad reputation. The SRU is trying to crack down on this to clean up the image of the lower divisions (one of them is crudely referred to as "the coconut cup") to present a better image of the game and arrest a minor downturn in playing numbers (despite the ARU's assurances that the game is growing - it might be elsewhere...).

The bloke who copped the red came forward and apologised, which was not expected of him, and everyone was appreciative.

Anyhoo, that was followed by a bit of one-on-one wrestling and then some quick tag sprints to wake us up. Then crossovers with a few variations, where I managed to get the ball out in front of everyone well and not drop it. Then tackle practice - which was more about technique than full contact, but after the First XV 8th man used me as a demo a couple of times, I was thinking about what a good idea my mouthguard would be, while trying not to bite my own tongue off <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I hit the bag OK, but I get the feeling I'm arching a little on contact and not getting low enough - me poor old back! While holding the bag later, I noticed a lot of the bigger blokes were aiming around the collarbone from the start which is not a good sign for a club with a few cards under their belt :nta The backs at least were going for the legs or the waist...

Next training is Thursday, which I've informed Mrs TA of and received a very blank expression by way of return. :nta Not sure if that's a good thing. I gave her a foot massage to smooth things over, but she's as enigmatic as the next female....

Both our grades are undefeated at this point, but we're going up against the other undefeated club this weekend (they're ahead of bonus points but the club championship is all tied up after three rounds). I reckon I'll have to play because they look a little short on numbers for 2nd grade, so a bench spot seems likely. When I was introduced to the seconds coach before training he got a brief rundown on my playing history, including the league and aussie rules stuff then asked if I'd like to play halfback <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> So I guess they're short of backs replacements in 2nd grade... I assume he means 9 and not 10 :nta

Finished the night off with another game of touch. Again no tries. Sore legs - crampy calf muscles at the end which I should get some magnesium into me... Had a protein shake when I got home, now its time for bed....

Feeling a damn sight fitter already to be honest. The coughing up lungs thing is annoying but sleep will fix that. Tomorrow I might do some weight exercises at home to up the core strength....

Excellent news that you're actually going to play Nick. I'd be doing the same if it weren't for my fragile retinas and sensitive corneas. My body constantly asks if it can still play rugby. But touch footy is all I'm allowed. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Anyway, this is about you, so back on topic. I suspect you'll be in a world of pain after one or 2 more training sessions, and particularly after your first game back. You'll be aware of pained muscles that you didn't even know existed. Perhaps one way of helping alleviate this pain is to get regular rub downs/massages from Mrs TA. Any chance of that?....no I didn't think so. 😁

I might have missed something, but what position do you think you will actually play? Surely it won't be halfback will it?

Not sure what position RB - I'm still actually negotiating game time with Mrs TA, but might just have to lie to her and say I'm going to watch :shifty: As long as I sneak in the odd home game I'll be happy - don't think I'll push for the massage either just quietly.... <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

One thing is for sure, given the number of Islanders playing, that there are very few guys halfback size. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> This might be hard to believe, but in real life I don't actually look 115kg :shifty: which is probably something to do with a neck that is too skinny for my current body, and a head the size of a watermelon on a bloke just on 6'. The coach probably thought I was on the biggish side for a half but might they be just be short of halfbacks. He might change his mind once he's seen my left-to-right passing <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Having looked at the team sheets, its clear that they don't always get a full team for second XV.

I'm in a bit of discomfort at the moment - calf, quad, hammy on both legs taking a bit of punishment from the touch footy stop-start, and I'm more aware of my shoulder and core muscles than I have been in a while, which would have been the tackle practice <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Will have to do a lot of stretching over the next few days - for my body and negotiations with my wife...

I wouldn't reccomend lying, that will just make her more negative about the idea when (amd it will be when....) she finds out. Try the barter system, do something for her as a trade off. I dunno, some sort of trip away or some other bollocks.

I went back playing at a (disturbingly) higher level than I ever managed before (effectively the wider squad for a effectively a national division 4 team) and as a back row. It hurts, and will hurt until you get used to it. It's not about fitness - I was doing 25km runs two times a week at that stage - it's about the explosiveness. You will see the inside of your lungs. This is entirely normal

Get some arnica gel. It's great tack, reduces bruising and eases you out. The topigels like Feldene and Oruvail are brilliant as well if you've a soft tissue injury. The two combined can reduce the stiffness and swelling to a dramatic extent.

Do not lie to Mrs. TA. If you want to tell porkies to a pregnant woman just out of the first trimester, be aware that your chances of ever having the wherewithal to complete a Littles TA front row are pre-teeee slim... <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Short and sharp training tonight - I turned up late just as the touch footy warmup was winding down, then it was straight into ruck and maul drills from kick return. Energetic stuff. Got stepped on a few times making tackles, and copped an accidental elbow in the jaw from the Firsts' star player <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> All good mate <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Did some touch n go work with a few blokes afterwards, who also turned up late. Think I pulled a glute - significant injury when your arse is as big as mine <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Lungs feel a lot better now - cough medicine and a protein shake - together at last!

Training tonight - did a bit of basic lineout work as a team, just running through throw, release, and then catch and pass out the backline to warm the hands up. Split up into backs and forwards for set plays. As they only had one backline the First XV ran with a couple of seconds filling the centre spots, I ran opposition for the backline set plays practice. Didn't get a whole lot of ball work in but worked on a bit of contact and trying to put the other blokes off their passes. I got to watch the moves and offer some advice to the first five on the angles his blokes were running. Believe I've got those set plays in my head OK anyway. Will be a different matter when I'm out of breath and looking at a couple of huge Samoans I'm sure <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Stayed back after everyone had gone, did some touch n go work to get up a bit of puff, then kick and chase practice. Also box kicks, touch finders, up n unders, a couple of dropgoals and drop restarts, and a couple of lineout throws just to remind myself that I can't hit a goalpost from 5 metres <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The best news is I've convinced Mrs TA that I'm good for the next home game (Saturday week). She was "ok" with it, provided I wasn't playing in the forwards, especially not the front row

I'm still of the opinion that its some kind of candid camera setup. :nta

BUT it seems there are only two guys with decent halfback experience at the club, for two teams. I have fuck all experience playing halfback, and my left-to-right pass is shit so I'll have to Joost my way through if it happens <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> I'm prepared to work on it, and am already feeling a damn sight fitter, so maybe I'll be a 110kg halfback  4th backrower and all that - Justin Marshall with pie boost anyone??? <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

As it is, any two-team club has an unsettled 2nd grade lineup depending on who turns up. In 4 weeks they've tried 2 different halfbacks and 3 different flyhalves. I've been looking at where I'd come off the bench, having already excluded centre and wing:

Fullback: Could be done - my kicking is still good, if a little rusty. Some of those set moves required a heap of wheels tho :nta
Second Five: Starting spot seems settled, but opportunity for crashball in the second half is there. Nathan Grey style, but without psychotic intent <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
First Five: Possible. Kicking ability won't come into play that much because it appears to be ball-in-hand or else. I'd also have to run those plays a few times at training.
Halfback: As above.

I've also considered blindside or 8 in a pinch. Openside might be above my lung capacity at this stage - though we're really playing two breakaways...
