@act-crusader guess my main point is that we in OZ/NZ need to totally rethink our tolerance levels. I've been banging this drum for a long time now, but there should be consistent messaging around tolerable levels of Covod in society post-vaccine. This adherence to elimination is just so foolish
I agree mate. But the states have made their beds with lockdowns and restrictions. How can they justify doing anything differently now, especially when certain parts of the economy are still in pain from previous lockdowns. The immediate questions will be - βwhatβs different now?β βWhy didnβt you allow us to stay open last time?β Sure they will say βhealth adviceβ, but to have any actual evidence of the positive effect of the vaccine will take some time for the research, evaluation etc.
Yeah, and what's worse , is that their draconian methods have been so unilaterally aupported at the polls. VIC, WA, QLD, NZ, pretty amazing

so, can you blokes who are smarter than me, and know things answer me a question?
What is the actual point of these stupid mini lockdowns that appear to do fuck all but stuff up long weekends and fuck small business hard in the ass? Perth had ANOTHER one this weekend. And lo and behold, despite the dude having one of the super-mega-ultimate spreader variants, and being out and about for days with it, and in all sorts of venues, they found 1 community case. And it was a really close contact.
People from WA, or who had been in WA, had already gone all over the country (and NZ it appears) and there was how much spread?
The WA Government will follow the script and claim the lockdown was a success and definitely saved lives. And yet no one can explain to me how?

I think you can start to mount a credible argument that certain governments are keen to maintain a level of fear to keep control. WA and QLD spring ro mind.

absolutely.
What i find quite reassuring is, there was a case in Auckland, this little thing in Perth, and the trans- Ta$man bubble didn't blink. That actually quite confidence building. I expected the opposite, early on every hiccup to be jumped upon.

Yeah that was great. I leave Thursday week, and I'm pretty confident that if I make that flight, Gladys will let me come back 4 days later.

Gladys will, but if you were a kiwi in Perth, I wouldnβt be optimistic.
I will never forget seeing people lined up being turned away from a testing centre at a hospital in Perth when it still had 2 hours of opening time left.
Internals know that tracing and testing is a massive issue in WA, so it wonβt be allowed to be stressed tested, so the easiest thing to do is lockdown or shut borders.

Agree, WA, VIC, QLD, I'd be more nervous.

You have my sympathy with the in-laws.
Makes this seem quite tame and we had it easy.
I was also locked down in a lake front property in Queenstown for level 4. We only had to get back to AKL and had flights (that they wouldn't let us change) but it was fucked. Only 3 days but no restaurants, takeaways, basically food. The hotel closed down while we were there and threw everything out (food wise) so no room service. Whatever we could find that could be eaten cold at the supermarket were "meals". Us and one other couple were the sole occupants of the hotel.
It was like The Shining, without the psycho redrum kid fortunately.

@snowy were you the guy in the bear pig suit, or the other guy?
I'm hoping the other guy. Have no idea where I might found any bear suits but they were selling alcohol, so anything could have happened. I drank a lot.

I fucking LOVED my 6 weeks of self iso / L4 lockdown in QT - all I did was run in the morning, then go to the supermarket - lunchtime nap, then light the fire and sit on the deck with wine and tunes from 2pm, then cook with more wine. After dinner, there was some wine.
Rinse, repeat.
It was especially great because at that stage I still had this notion that we would get back to Bali, and that the trans Ta$man bubble would be open by June - funny/not-funny to look back now at how wrong I was!!!
