Teams will play eight teams once and three teams twice with an emphasis on derby matches

I wonder what this means, exactly. Obviously good for Oz 🙄

I doubt the Aussie teams will be able to avoid playing at least one NZ team twice. Otherwise the NZ teams will want to do the same. We wait for the full draw.

I like the name, open to a couple of Japanese teams please, then we don't get the stupid extra 3 games

12 Teams. Five Oz. Five NZ. Fijian Druan. Moana Pasifika.

14 Game regular season. 7 Home games. 7 Away.

Each team to play each other once then three extra derbies.

One points table. No conference system. Teams to be ranked 1 to 12.

Top eight teams to qualify for Quarter Finals (1v8, 2v7, 3v6, 4v5). Then Semis, then the Grand Final.

17 week competition to start in February 2022and finish before a July International window.

Agreed, best thing about this new competition is the name. Future expansion to Japan or west USA left as possible. Makes clear that the future of the competition does not involve the SA sides.

Seems to be an even playing field and a fresh start. Bring it on.

Pretty happy with it, regardless of an 8 team finals which is trying to give everyone a prize scenario, I don't mind the 3 extra games being derbies, if it helps the weaker country c'est la vie, no system is perfect! Love we have a couple of PI teams, and reckon the work on is a Japan and American team.

This is the Aussie promo. Also interesting to read on some of the Australian franchises' accounts that this competition format has been confirmed for 2022 and 2023. This isn't clear from the NZR and RA official media releases.

Nope he just played for them in the made up game last year - this is a made up blues graphic, how would they know? They probably didn't spend too much time on the other teams apart from trying to get a famous face, same as DMac.

Now that everything is official, hopefully we will see some player announcements for both the Drua and MP soon.

@tim I've seen several more rumours: Hurricanes and Chiefs (to replace Dmac).

Chiefs would make sense and I honestly wouldn't complain. We've talked a lot here about how getting out of Dunedin would be good for him. I'd happily accept him.

    Moana would also make sense.

Apologies if this has already been covered above... but does MP have any significance in terms of national team eligibility, or is it pretty much a 6th NZ Super team?

e.g. currently to get selected for the ABs you need to play for one of the 5 NZ teams. Will that remain the same, or can they select MP players?
