Well despite not updating this thread for nearly a year thankfully I can report that it hasn’t been a year since workouts……..everything I’ve done lately has been noted down on pen and paper and basically consists of something physical almost every day.

Basically a rotation of push ups ( five different variations at last count ), explosive jumps ( two different kinds ), chin ups, rope climbs, shadow boxing, hitting the heavy bag, tire flips, Hitting tires with a sledgehammer ( great for power, conditioning, coordination and fitness ) and ( especially over lockdown ) big walks in the hills…..but in terms of conventional “weights” as such there has been fuck all.

Swiiming and running have not entered my workout routine at any stage either but I’m feeling pretty fantastic and doing all the above is never a drag which I think is the main thing. In terms of food I’m intermittent fasting most days and getting loads of lean protein ( supplemented with protein bars and shakes when needed ) and vege while trying to ease up on the bread and carbs. Best of all I can still manage a few lovely craft brews ( my only vice ) or a glass or two of red and not feel too bad.

I might even update this thread more than once a year.

That hitting tires with a sledgehammer looks cool. Even chopping shit with an axe is a great workout.

I love it and being Scottish the best bit is it’s free once you fork out for the hammer.

There’s a bunch of old tires down near the beach so now that lockdown is over I drive there and give them a big smash ( understandably walking with a sledgehammer is not a good look so I didn’t do it for a few weeks ).

It would definitely be my new favourite exercise, just be sure to start the swing with one hand near the head then bring them together down the bottom for full power and range of motion.

Old school training at it’s best !

Busted out 3 x 15 of these this morning. To say the triceps were burning is an understatement, these are tough to do with good form. They should compliment other chest stuff nicely. Definitely pays to film yourself to make sure the arse isn’t too high or low…….it’s amazing how just a subtle change can make push ups that much harder.

Have already packed the sledgehammer in the car to smash some tires later this avo too while out towards the beach.

After a morning plank of 5 minutes and a lovely hill stroll with the girl I decided today was a good day to head to the park and do some sledgehammers and chin up variations. Started with the sledgehammers at first ( ensuring I did the same number of left and right sided swings, no one wants muscle imbalances after all ) and finished with some double overhand swings. Holy fuck, these destroyed the forearms like nothing else ( bear in mind I’ve done rope climbs, heavy grips and deadlifted 230kg without straps back in the day ). Fuck me, forget the chins, even steering the wheel on the car after was tough enough let alone hanging onto a bar…..

Why didn’t I discover this terrific exercise years ago ?

On the road for work so doing a bit of a hotel workout. Big walk down the main drag and back then shadow boxing and multiple sets of the tricep extension push ups. Right elbow ( I’m left handed ) tends to flare up a bit and get sore after doing these so I’ve Deep Heated the shit out of it and hoping it takes care of itself. Getting old sucks arse.

Started the morning with some Sonny Liston kick jump squat type things.

3 x 15 of them, great to get the legs absolutely burning if you do them right. Also did sets of chins at the shitty hotel gym, 2 x 12 then 1 x 10 as it’s been a few weeks. Made sure the ROM was decent on these. Right elbow still giving me grief, not sure if the Deep Heat is genuinely helping or if it’s a placebo ?

Pretty much ended up doing the same workout two days in a row just to give the muscles a bit of a shock. Planks in the morning ( I really must look up more variation on these ) followed up by sledgehammer smashes in the avo. These are feeling awesome now, today was about 300 swings in total and the forearm pain from the first few times is basically non existent now which is pleasing.

The initial unco ness on the right ( weaker ) side is correcting itself now too and the sledgehammer isn’t bouncing back from the tyre at awkward angles like it did a little bit at the start. Lungs and overall power just feel better and better each time I give these a hoon. Awesome fun !

3 x 12 ninja jumps followed by Weighted planks ( 3 x 2 mins with 20kg on my back ) for this morning. Fair to say the added weight is making them much more taxing. Weather dependant will go and smash the tyre later this avo, the issue with that of course is I can’t walk there ( and get a bit of cardio ) cos strolling along with a sledgehammer looks very dodgy.

Usual week of chins, walks, calisthenic push ups etc. managed to completely destroy myself with a tire workout yesterday avo after a couple of beers with a mate. Basically 15 on the left side, 15 on the right side, 15 double overhand repeated 4 x in a circuit for a total of 180 swings ( Resting for about 30 seconds every 15 swings I can maintain about a swing per second which obviously slowed a bit by the last round ).

Fuck, even my FEET were sore after all that. Absolutely rooted.

Nothing particularly unusual in terms of workouts but a terrible weekend in terms of eats/drinks…..and by terrible I mean loads of awesome, fun indulgent gluttony. Heavy drinking Saturday ( mates invited us for pizza/beer/wine ) and Sunday ( the Fury/Wilder fight where as I mentioned we were too pissed to realise we were watching the old fight ) and a long walk from town to Island Bay cos I’m Scottish and I don’t like ordering ubers. Fun as all fuck but the body doesn’t appreciate this kind of punishment at 44 like it did at 24. I suppose a big long walk counts as slow burning cardio ?

Monday was an annual leave day smashing up walls in my apartment and transporting rubbish and today was a morning of planks, chins, dips and calisthenics. At least the rep numbers are still good despite the copious drinking and bad sleeping……but fuck doing things to that extent every weekend like I used to. Next session will be close to Xmas I think !

Yeah it's very hard to back that up at our age.

My youngest said something brilliant the other day. When I went to bed earlier than him yet again on a Saturday night I apologised for being such a boring dad. He replied that he'd prefer me to be boring and go to bed early rather than be completely unable to function for most of the next day. And he's right. The number of Saturdays or Sundays that were completely written off because of excess the previous evening is pretty staggering.

Definitely. It’s nice to have a flare up every now and again, we are social creatures after all but like your good self I don’t ever want to be at the stage where my sons want/need me and I’m too fucked from the night before to be there for them.

But it was a fun weekend of laughs, beers, pizza, snacks, boxing and pub crawling. Great times.

Wellington is putting on a typical “Wellington” day today so loads of push up variations and ploymetric jumps inside before hitting the road for work. I may brave some sledgehammer work if the wind dies down a bit.

@Rancid-Schnitzel you’ll be thrilled to know I went out for a few angry swings ( in pants, shirt and jacket haha ) on the way home. Wellington has thrown one of those stereotypically bad days that every fluffybunny thinks is typical of the capital. Wind, sleet, rain, a bit of hail and a high of 8 degrees.

Muscles ached after but too cold to build up an actual sweat.

Usual bits and pieces and some good functional box carrying, turns out the potential future mrs MN5 has a lot of heavy books which she piled into a big box and made me carry up a couple of flights of stairs while we were moving.

Also tire slams in the rain and wind are pretty satisfying. Only about a five minute workout but all action and the forearm aches afterwards aren’t as bad as they used to be. Sweeeeeeeeeeet.

On the road for work this week, hope I’m on the ground floor at the motel, plyometrics probably sound a bit weird if your downstairs neighbour doesn’t know what is happening.

My youngest is obsessed with improving his vertical leap and loves box jumps. Only problem is he had a habit of using besser bricks. I say HAD because it inevitably went pearshaped yesterday and his shin hit the edge of one of the bricks. Time to invest in some proper padded plyometric boxes me thinks.

Yeah I think stretching and explosive stuff and knees over toe workouts help that quite a bit. In saying that my upper body is more explosive than the lower body overall I think.

My lower body is only explosive in the sense that my knees blow out.

    Haha !

Get the boy to watch some “knees over toe” guy on YouTube. As he is young and not a broken wreck like you and I he should benefit hugely.

I’m not sure my vertical leap but it was definitely more than enough to get in the NZ Police if I wanted to. The trick is to swing your arms on the way down and “explode” up.

Yeah, fark I'm soft. Have to tell him to stop being so rough with me sometimes. It's like being attacked by a farking chimpanzee.

YouTube has its uses. He's down with all the techniques. Wants to be able to slam dunk a basketball. Hopefully his unfortunate accident hasn't traumatised him.

Get him doing these if he isn’t already, they’re on the menu as part of tomorrows motel morning workout. My oldest can smash these pretty well, youngest not yet given he’s carrying a little bit of extra weight and not as much muscle but he’s trying !

Look back above. Poor bugger stuffed the jump and landed shin first on the edge of a besser brick.
