I dont want to be the guy bitching about diving, I know I can turn off and not pollute this threat.

But fuck me it's a blight on the game. Football can be such am attractive game, but when an entire match can turn on somebody cheating , it's hard to enjoy.

This Aussie / Tunisia game is only halfway through, and there has been at least 10 incidents of faking injuries (with miraculous recoveries) and diving.

I cant for the life of me understand why authorities don't try harder to stamp it out.

FIFA think it's genius, not something to stamp out

@voodoo I swear that professional footballers need to be good actors too.

I watched most of the Argentina-Mexico game around the live rugby. Messi and co survive to fight another day. The Italian ref wasn't falling for all of the diving.

Now Germany has their WC final tomorrow against Spain.

70% through "FIFA Uncovered" and none of the onfield shit surprises me.

Football doesn't really need more fans, but they could get them if they'd stop the bullshit.

Just to digress from the actual football fo5 a moment.

The media has been making a big thing about the poor fan experience.

I follow a couple of Fulham podcasts, one of which dropped a pod over the weekend with the three hosts all out in Doha.

They all agreed the experience has been brilliant. Grounds are magnificent, it's easy enough to get a beer, but the main thing is how good it is having all the games in one location. They have been able to mix and chat with fans from all over the world rather than the usual just from your group sort of thing. Everyone's really friendly and a real buzz. Been able to watch multiple games each day. They touched on the sportswashing theme and weren't trying to be apologists for the Qatari regime, simply pointing out that the actual fan experience is quite different to media reports.

@MiketheSnow Maybe I'm missing something but I haven't seen a lot of goals from outside the 18 yard box. I agree, worth a dig.

Germany does have a lifeline now with Costa Rica beating Japan. A loss isn't terminal, and a draw wouldn't be a bad result either.

@dogmeat Well maybe they, the media, because by being there they really can't complain about what goes on in Qatar so they have to complain about something else.

So I don't think they would lose their speed and agility if some of these players went to the gym and lifted weights. I understand that they burn calories up the wazoo.

A 1-1 draw so Germany is still alive. They have to beat Costa Rica and hope that Spain beats Japan.

Yep, final clashes in group e will be fun, anyone can make it and no one is safe.

Spain are guaranteed with a draw and only go out if Japan beats them and Germany thrashes Costa Rica since their goal difference is so good.

Japan and Costa Rica both go through with a win. A draw might be enough if other results go there way.

Germany must win and they need Japan to lose. They'll still be tied on points so they'll be looking for goals and hoping a wide margin in the other game. In theory they can make it if Japan wins but Spain's goal difference is so good that will be tough work.

If they lose this game could they still qualify. As it would be possible that all teams apart from Spain had 1 win. If Germany win easily in the last round and Spain won easily too

that undid Japan last night. They just passed the ball around waiting for the perfect opening, just assuming it would come. it didn't. And then Costa Rica score with their only shot on target of the entire tournament.

    Tough shit.

There is an enormous lack of ambition at this tournament.

TBF the attacking intent & ambition is there for Japan

I just think they thought Costa Rica would be a doddle after beating Germany

If you stick to the 2 minute “highlights” package there is plenty of ambition 😀

The average goals per game so far is down from the last couple of WC’s. But I think overall the intent is far more defensive.

It's a mistake to assume because someone is rich now that they always were.

Gianni Infantino is the son of relatively poor Italian immigrants to Switzerland. Given how socially closed Switzerland can be (and the Valais particularly) he may have quite a lot of idea of how an immigrant worker might feel.
