Not long ago Southland got cleaned up by the Southland B team yet here they are with a scarcely believable twelve nil lead after thirty three minutes thanks to some dead eye dick goalkicking, including two from inside his own half, from Wharenui Hawera. Lots of breakdown penalties conceded by Otago also helping their cause. Having said that Otago have looked the most likely to actually score tries, just some last line defence as well as Otago errors at the last moment preventing a couple being recorded.

And score they do with a try in the right hand corner right on halftime by openside flanker Dillon Hunt. Southland 12 - 05 Otago

Teams giving away a lot of penalties (including the Bay) are warned! Hawera has a great boot.

Btw, these law changes are really costly for teams that haven't used them in club rugby and/or have a lot of Super Rugby players and don't adapt to them (or the ref's rulings on them) quickly. Not sure the refs apply them the same way either.

Southland, like Auckland are struggling with the rules. Suprised they're still in this game.

I don't think Southland was struggling with the rules. They just weren't good enough. Otago was the team giving away a lot of penalties due to the new rules but adapted better in the 2nd half.

Southland is one of the provinces that used the new rules in club rugby and I don't think they had any players on the field who didn't play club rugby this year (edit: maybe Collier).

Maybe it was just me, but I thought Southland gave away a lot of penalties by putting their hands in the ruck and trying to jackle. The scoreline was a fair reflection of the game I thought. Otago will definitely be pushing for promotion.

Must say Southland lost the game in the second half. Their defence was good in the first and because Otago gave away all those penalties, Hawera made sure Southland were leading at HT. I didn't have the impression Southland gave away that many penalties; if they did, it didn't do any damage (not close enough to the sticks for Otago to score penalty goals).
