AFL 2017 is a couple of weeks away, but already fucking Essendon are the talking point.

Couple of their employees that were made scapegoats for the "supplements" program have made some fairly serious allegations around meetings with gangsters; removing evidence of the program; and covering up drug use, fraud and sexual harassment. Of course, Essendon officials have written these off as the baseless accusations made by disgruntled ex-employees. At least this should squash any fucking narrative around "redemption" and "comebacks". 5 fucking years the preseason has been overshadowed by this shit club.

For the actual footy, bookies of course have the Giants as favourites, followed by both last year's grand finalists, and then the Crows. West Coast, Geelong, Hawthorn all favoured to make the 8 as well.

Following them the usual suspects on the cusp in Freo (surely not), Collingwood, and Port, as well as the steady improvers in St Kilda and Melbourne.

The Lions will get the spoon.

Given how wildly wrong i got last years, i'll still have a crack at the 8:
    GWS
    Crows
    Sydney
    Bulldogs
    Geelong
    West Coast
    Melbourne
    Port

    1. Crows ... I'll believe it when I see it.
    2. So what did the Giants do right that the Suns didn't?

Not an expert and don't follow that closely but do enjoy watching (more so than league). Especially afternoon games if the sun is shining.

    Hadn't caught the Essendon news.

Good chat around the Crows mate. Maybe a bit light in the midfield, especially if injuries strike, but any team who can score like they do are in with a shout. hard to beat in Adelaide too. If they had managed to pry Bryce Gibbes from Carlton they would have been damn near favourites.

What did GWS do better than the Suns? Not be based on the Gold Coast. Not spend a massive wedge on the best player in the game, and then surround him with complete kids. Have that academy that just churns out talent, giving them players and trade material. They also got 2 dominant drafts rather than 1. And for some reason, the best players at the Suns keep getting long-term injuries.

Carlton are appallingly bad and are getting dusted by Richmond, who are also shit.

I went to the game ,

two sides who were ordinary last year and more than likely wont feature at the pointy end of the season , Thursday night , and there was 73,000 there , crazy mad sports city this one ,

Richmond unveiled a new attacking game plan , playing on and attacking from everywhere at speed , which will probably come unstuck against the better teams , but it was a bit of fun ,and the supporters had smiles on their faces , which makes a change

Dusty Martin the best player on the field , put on a clinic

@kiwiinmelb you would have missed the Ch7 commentators trying to put him in the same bracket as Dangerfield and Fyfe because he racked up good numbers against the 2nd worst team in the comp....

The crowd was unreal wasn't it? AFL is king in this country. 73,000 for the first game of the season containing two teams who won't play finals.

@mariner4life Rebels Tahs tonight will be lucky to pull 10% of that crowd. There's another 2 AFL games at MCG and two at Etihad Stadium this weekend alone - and the Formula 1 going on.

And Saints v Dees will draw a crowd because expectations are very high for both teams.

Speaking of which, @mariner4life where are my Saints in your top 8? They'll be there bro, put the house on it.

@ACT-Crusader just out. Actually i fucked it up, because i actually think Hawthorn will make it obviously.

I reckon the Saints, Melbourne, and Port are all playing for that 8th spot.

Saints v Dees is probably game of the round given the expectation (okay that's over-egging it, it's obviously GWS in Adelaide).

Dustin is probably a bit different to them , they are more genuine midfielders ,

    He is more a midfielder/ Forward ,

if he was at a club with a stronger midfield he would spend a lot more time forward where he is nightmare to play on

    Saints looking good so far.

Good to have Roosie back in commentary, great insights.

Did i miss where Essendon didn't play last year? How can they have a "comeback"?

Oh, you mean you got your suspended players back. The ones suspended for your suss supplements program. Righto

Some of the comments by bombers supporters on line are complete bullshit. Re-write history much?

@mariner4life it was hilarious listening to talkback sports radio this morning. One Bombers supporter rings up and asked why Jobe Watson had to give back his Brownlow. I kid you not.

It was pleasing to her Greg Denham, the journo rip into this supporter.

@ACT-Crusader they're fucking delusional. I read one where some silly bint was arguing the AFL should have had James Hird there as a special guest. WTF?

The strange part of their penalty as it turns out ,

Because they finished last, they were eligible to pick up the number 1 draft pick ,

Draft picks are like gold in the AFL, and they pick up the best kid in the country to add to their list as part of their punishment

@kiwiinmelb that was weak as piss by the AFL, who just didn't want to cop the heat from the supporters, and could hold their hands up and say "we had nothing to do with this decision"

Didn't really affect the Lions as we got the kid we probably would have taken at 1 anyway.
