Tried the push up thing mate, but think I will have to give it a go next week as I was poked when I tried it. Did 6 mins on the rower last night and then into bench press reps and then 20 mins rowing. I am in good pain. xzxhang1

After reading this thread I changed a couple of months ago from cardio then weights to weights first - man, I have been wasting time for years! Has made a significant difference in a bit of weight loss, a fair bit more fat loss, so I guess some muscle gain, but all with the same effort. Good one guys.
Funny thing is Scorz, I have mostly subconsciously changed the way I eat too in the same time (even into Bart's tuna tins too!!), so that's helping as you say.
Nice one cyclo.

There is a psyche that most people fall into and that is they have to do "cardio" before they start lifting weights to (and these are the ones I've heard around) "loosen up", "get the blood flowing", "get the heart racing", "warm up", etc.

They all sound good, and I agree that before lifting weights its important that the body is warmed up a bit in order to lift big, and the joints are loosened. But people don't realise that they don't need to go on a tready or bike for 15mins to get that. I always warmup before a workout with a variation of bodyweight squats, close grip pushups, back raises and pullups. Doing those exercises without rest for a couple of sets gets the heart racing, gives a full body workout and will contribute to fat loss as well.

BTW what type of cardio are you doing to finish up your workouts?
Well ACTC, I usually do 40 minutes or more. Might be elliptical trainer thingy on intervals, try to keep HR about 140-150, might be half on that and half on the bike. I am slowly getting back on the rower (see other thread!!) also to mix it up.
I have done a few sessions with a personal trainer lately (the gym offered a couple of freebies) and he has me doing all this stuff that looks like bugger all, but geez it makes me sweat and gets the HR up. He is trying to make me more flexible - told me I was fit enough but about as flexible as, well the weight bar! Also all out of balance - can push good weights on some things but poor on others. It's all interesting though.
Scorz, I know what you mean about the "free advice" from some. I feel good when I'm fit, which I am reasonably so at the moment. Got a mate who binge exercises, does all sorts of crazy diet changes, then chucks it in and puts on 10kg, then repeats the process, but chips me when I eat my scrambled eggs and bacon for brekkie when we meet up some times.
But I'm sticking to weights then cardio!! Advice from the Fern is different.

just as an aside - I don't do them together - ends up taking too long. Currently do weights in the morning, and cardio in evening. WEights take 50-60 minutes (+15 minutes Abs), and an evening cycle of 40 minutes.

Woulds be a two hour session if I combined them, and I don't have that sort of chunk of time to spare during the day at either end!!

Agree with the advice thing to, offer it (and receive it), but do't ram it anywhere!! I get asked lots being a gym tragic for 20 years, and I always preface with "this has worked for me in the past", and also, "it often depends on what the flavour of the month is" - I've seen squats go from super deep to above parallel to christ knows what ovre the years. SO if it works, do it, and if there is added 'danger' (deep squats), be bloody careful, but do it if it works for you.

Also in the last 6 months have extolled the virtue of getting a trainer - costs a few bob, but worth every penny - only about $40 a month though, but that is not for sessions, just for the measure and programmes (eat / train).

SO you're doing the right things I reckon Scorz - doing ANYTHING is the right thing. But avoid the word diet I reckon - Eating plan sounds muchy better, diet makes me think of fads follwers like Cyclco's mate!!

Haha, yeah, "eating plan" is a much better label Bart. "The Scorz Diet" xzxnegative

Can't wait to move to Hamilton and get my free weights back and have some space to do things properly again! Cable machine... Meh.
Note: Not that this is in any way directed at anyone on Te Fern,
Isn't it awkward when you have been getting results and are pretty comfortable with how you're progressing and then someone tells you (sometimes wthout any real prelude) "No it's all wrong, you need to do this (cardio weights/weights/cardio argument variations), and don't eat that stuff you'll get reliant on it(protein shakes), I do this (1,000 sit ups a week religiously) and this (standing dumbell curls with tiny weights) and I avoid this (drinking cold water) blah blah"... While you're standing there in jeans you couldn't fit and a shirt you couldn't have worn 3 or 4 months ago confidently, diplomatically saying "well, I'm pretty happy with where I am and the stuff I do is working for me, everyone's body responds differently"... xzxdash2
Best of all, they see fit to try and shove it down your face every time. How to lose friends and annoy the shit out of people! Especially when one of the main perps is a mate who struggles to not get blown away in a stiff breeze or as a truck passes by. xzxsarcastic
I had a guy at my gym say "hey, why are you doing shoulders and back on the same day, you shouldnt do two major body parts on the same day"... he probably thought he was being helpful but regurgitating what youve read in a book with out any regard for a persons goals or their workout history does no one any favours.

Personally I need to do at least ten minutes of row/bike before weights to prepare my body to lift any decent tin. I always squat lower and heavier after a decent cardio warmup. Im dont do cardio after weights, Im usually thinking of my next meal by that stage!
