FIBA World Cup

  • Frustratingly, Australia vs Canada is on live but we're playing Brazil at the same time and it's not on TV. When i last checked we were up 34-32 in Q2.

    Ridiculous

  • Maori TV is showing the game live.

    Sweet!!!

  • Instant first impression is there's more atmosphere at this game than Australia vs Canada.

  • ..and we're doing well hanging with Brazil, who are ranked 12th in the world to our 38th!

  • Damn - worked out to a 56-50 lead (and a shot for 58) and then our shooting went cold as ice - while Brazil was bombing threes from all over the shop.

28-6 run for Brazil and we need a miracle!

  • Final score 94-102. Australia beat Canada 108-92.

  • Not a bad hitout for our boys. That run by Brazil was too much to come back from. Abercrombie was cold as. Nice to see Webster hitting shots.

Some strange rotations from Henare I thought.

  • @mofitzy_

I was reading earlier today that Canada has 17 NBA players and that 15 of them one-by-one turned down the opportunity to represent their country.

Am I mistaken in thinking maybe the players don’t take this tournament seriously and simply don’t care... or are NBA teams refusing to allow them to play? (Bit o’ both?)

  • @Salacious-Crumb
My guess would be the players don't care - the Olympics are the pinnacle of the international game, the amount of money they receive for playing is minuscule compared to the NBA, and if they are injured then it could damage their livelihood.

  • The USA team is one of the weakest in a long time due to the unavailability of most of their NBA stars. Pop seemed to be replacing players every day in the pre-WC camps. Simmons pulled out of the Aust team.

  • The USA only has one All Star, in Kemba Walker.

And then in 2020 all these pricks will want in on the Olympics.

At least Giannis has made it there for Greece.

    And Jokic for Serbia.

A few other OZ NBA players other than Simmons unavailable as well - Thon Maker, Ryan Broekhoff, Bolden,

But that’s been the case since 92 and plenty of superstars have played not only Olympics but World Champs/Cups as well.

I think for the US at least it’s a cycle thing. All the big names have played in a couple of tournaments at the very least. Time for others to have a turn.

I agree with @shark that some big names will want in next year, but I see guys like Kemba and Donovan back. Harrison Barnes is a team guy and has been there before so might be in again. Tatum has the sort of game that is made for int’l ball so will be around for a while as well. But there are some definite b-graders on this team that are making up the numbers

  • The Tall Blacks are up 53 - 44 at HT against Montenegro.

They're shooting 56% from the field.

  • Tall Blacks were a bit cold in the 3rd and gave up the lead to Montenegro, but they've come alive in the 4th and are up 12 with 4 minutes to go.

    83 - 71 at the moment.

  • NZ win 93-83

Greece beat Montenegro 85-60 so were more decisive. We play them on Thursday.

  • Corey Webster with 25pts, 6rbs, 6asts. 6/8 from deep.

Abercrombie is really struggling on offense. 5 points in the first game and only 4 in this game.

  • Big games from C Webster and Fotu. Corey's shot is sweet when he's on fire.

  • It was the brothers Webster show. Two great back door layup plays between Corey and Tai. Crucial scoring contributions from lots of players early in the 4th quarter when Montenegro threatened to overtake us. Great game played in great spirit

  • Greece lost to Brazil by 1 point, 79-78.

  • What a game between Turkey and US. US win by 1 in OT.

The NBA players for Turkey coming up big. İlyasova excellent and Osman big in the 4th and OT. Korkmaz hit some big shots and played with real speed.

Also former NBL Cairns guard, Wilbekin played well off the bench for Turkey also.

So that means Montenegro are gone. The winner of NZ vs Greece joins Brazil in the next round.

Henare better be spending plenty of time working out how to stop Giannis.

  • Blatant (but Fiba legal) goaltend at the death by Brazil vs Greece.

NZ needs some bigs. Loe is as soft as a marshmallow inside. Doesn't box out, doesn't contest, contestable rebounds and even when he gets a clean block the ball still goes in.....but great win against quality competition even if the Montenegro team seems to be at odds with their coaching staff. Can not understand why Vucevic was so badly underutilised.

  • I only watched the 2nd half but wondered why Loe was on court and Pledger on the bench unless the latter was injured. We've always lacked size and mongrel at the 4 and 5 spots, and don't have a rim protector. Well, we do, but he doesn't want to play.

I'd use Smith-Milner more because he puts his body on the line.

It was damn good play by Caboclo given he plays in the NBA and his natural instinct would’ve been to let it go.

Giannis barely touches the ball in the offence.

Brazil have pretty good balance in their lineup.

Here's a few defensive strategies for Giannis.

Why am I not surprised that I could find so many pics like this involving Kobe?

  • Not a bad game tonight between Italy and Serbia. Italy’s starting 5 is as good as anyone’s at the tournament, but they have zero depth.

Serbia have good players coming out of their ears and when Bogdanivic is on fire they will beat anyone. Must be favourites.

  • Tall Blacks only down by 5 at three-quarter time.

Apparently our free throw shooting has been crap or we might have been ahead. Mind you, from what I've seen, Greece's has been pretty poor as well.

  • And immediately get the defence wrong at the start of the 4th and Greece nail three threes.

  • Bloody Greeks - sinking three-pointers every time we get close!

  • @Chris-B said in FIBA World Cup:

Crowd started getting on them too. We were fighting but that little streak hurt.

Corey was awesome and I thought Fotu played well.

Freak played his best game of the WC.

  • An upset with Czech Republic beating Turkey to go through to the next round.

  • NZ pump Japan, I don't know the implications but the comms reckon we are on the verge of qualifying for the knockout round? Isaac Fotu is a beast, just the kind of guy the Breakers could do with. I imagine the money in Europe is far better than anything he could get in the ANBL

  • Impressed with the USA defence against Greece.

We missed that. Maybe Olympic Qualification?

    Oh yeah, that was it

  • Just saw we beat Turkey 102-101.
