If we're talking drum and bass player combos, Queen's Roger Taylor (drums) and John Deacon (bass guitar) were both masters of their respective instruments, but absolutely tremendous together and they complemented Dr Brian May and Freddie Mercury really well. Everyone remembers Freddie and Brian, but there were no passengers in Queen.
I’d rate JPJ and Bonzo, Entwistle and Moon and Geezer and Ward way ahead of them but it’s hard to really shine compared to, as you say, Brian and Freddie ( even though Queen aren’t really my thing overall ). I don’t recall them doing anything other than make those two look personally but I could be wrong.
It’s always tempting to name “such and such” as a top unit just because they’re part of your favourite band.
Their technical ability came out more live and on album tracks rather than the big singles that everyone remembers, but agree that they probably aren't the best ever combo, just that they are/were top drawer (Deacon retired a few years after Freddie died). Another One Bites The Dust and Under Pressure are Queen's two best-known bass lines which, to your point, shows it doesn't have to be particularly difficult to be famous.
Something else about Queen was that everyone could write, as they all had top 5 singles in either the UK or USA, with each band member's biggest hit being Bohemian Rhapsody (Mercury), We Will Rock You (May), Another One Bites The Dust (Deacon) and Radio Gaga (Taylor). Not sure if it's still the case, but they made the Guiness Book of Records as the first 4 person band to have UK top 10 singles written by each band member.

All very impressive and I do get your point. I suppose a big contrast to that is the other three guys in AC/DC who aren’t Angus and Brian. They have a cushy gig that anyone vaguely competent could manage. Then again it takes discipline to play with that amount of steadiness and ‘non’ flashyness so they do their job well.

Angus would say that Malcolm was the most important member of the band.

Fair call I will stand corrected on that from a writing point of view and what the brothers did behind the scenes setting the band up. He wrote some pretty cool riffs for someone who appeared to know only three chords as well !
I fucken love AC/DC but Rudd looks half asleep during their live gigs, at least Williams tries to make his bass lines appear more complicated than they are.
