The Central HB Sub-Union officially went into recess in 2003.

There is still a Rep Rugby Committee which selects rep teams. Central HB have held the Bebbington Shield since 2009.

Tui wider training group (as announced 14 June 2022)

    f328c959-4653-4fba-b189-3d6c8f9a474d-image.png

Lots of familiar faces from previous years, but also some newbies.
Some old-timers again in the frame (Emma Jensen, Gemma Woods, for example), some of our exciting players (Harmony Kautai, Amelia Pasikala), Super Rugby players (Kathleen Brown, Krysten Cottrell).

Notable absentees: Teilah Ferguson (was back from Otago, played for the Hurricanes Poua). "Poached" by Wellington or injured? Same with big prop Ashley Palu, who played for Matatu. Would be gutted if she'd be playing for another province, too. We've lost some real talent the last couple of years with Liana Mikaele-Tu'u and Cortez Te Pou (now playing league in Australia) the most recent ones.

@Stargazer Harmony Kautai was in the Condor team at the World Schools Sevens at the beginning of the year.

It that the huge number 26? If so she was very close to being my favourite player, don't know why but she just was. If not then that anonymous number 26 still retains the honour.

@Crucial Yep, she's a real prospect. I was disappointed she didn't end up in a SR Aupiki team. Not sure she's still at school, or not. IIRC this will be her 3rd year playing FPC.

That sevens team was U18 rather than at school at the last comp as there was a cycle of players that missed a comp from Covid

My fear was justified. Teilah Ferguson has been named in the Wellington Pride squad, despite playing for Napier Tech until last week. She's listed as a Poneke players, so maybe she's been playing for them, too, but geez, we need a player like her more than Wellington does. Really disappointing.

The Tui squad for the Farah Palmer Cup has been announced:

    e93aa4c2-5ac1-45aa-a5d4-8caa6f72c692-image.png

Many players from last year returning, also quite a few new names.
Notable absence is prop Ashley Palu (Canterbury) and also Teilah Ferguson (Wellington), who unfortunately - despite playing club rugby for Tech - has not returned after finishing her studies in Dunedin.

@Stockcar86 @Stockcar86 You guys might have a number in the HB B Team or, more likely, the HB Samoan Team.

Not unexpected, but the Tui lost today; by a bigger margin than it should have been (in terms of history between the teams).

Defence is a big work-on, line-out throwing, too. Some players don't look fit.
Otago really using the width of the field well and their kicking game was really good. The Tui's defence didn't adapt.
Otago also has the advantage of some "stars" in their squad that we simply don't have.
Nevertheless, Otago had several players in the bin, playing with 13 for some time, and the Tui should have taken advantage of the space on the field. They didn't.

Several newbies making their FPC debut for the Tui today. Also a lot of the other starters would have been reserves in previous years, but that happens when players keep leaving. And a 4:4 split on the bench. Injuries?

Harmony Kautai was playing out of position and I prefer her on the wing. Amelia Pasikal, I prefer her as a starter in the midfield. She had great impact from the bench.

The young new halfback, Kahlia Awa, who scored a try on debut, looks promising. We need a new talented halfback, because Emma Jensen is well into her 40s and not sure how long she still wants to play. She's also not as good anymore as she used to be. Funny to hear she's Awa's teacher at Hastings Girls'. Totally irrelevant, but Awa is Cooper Flanders' girlfriend.

Our best was Gemma Woods. She just keeps going, year after year. Her experience, but also her determination during the game, is a great example for the young ones. Great engine.

Final point: the player who took out Nina Pineaha in the line-out should have received a red card. Pineaha landed on her neck/head.

    Full time: Tui 22 - 44 Otago

North Harbour away, next week. Hopefully Kath Brown will be available for that game.

This looks like a really good team! Lots of players from the 2019 Top 4 winning Hastings Boys' team & some of the best from Napier Boys' that I remember. I haven't seen some of them play since their schooldays, so I can't wait to see how they go. Or maybe I should see, "read" how they go, because I'm not sure we get to see any of the games. I hope sideline live will livestream some of these rep games!

A few players have changed position since leaving school. Not only Cooper Flanders is now definitely a 7, instead of an 8, but they've also changed Nick Ennor from a lock into a prop! Must be a big lump of a prop!
