Brumbies vs Hurricanes
-
The battle of the Capitals. I’m looking forward to this one, I think it could quite easily go either way. The Brumbies will obviously look to take on the Canes upfront, while the Canes will obviously look to run the Brumbies off their feet. Not sure what the injury updates are for each team but I think Tom Banks is still out with a fractured jaw.
Long range forecast looks a little grim but hopefully that clears so we see some fast paced Sunday arvo footy.
I’d like the Canes to select the same team that ended up starting on Saturday, including Howden who was very impressive.

Not sure if this has been posted yet but Holland actually praises PUJ.

I imagine that he has been hearing the same rumours circulated on here and is realizing that he has chased away an AB caliber center.
-
I'd like to see this starting lineup :
Rakete-Stone
Aumua
Lomax
Sangster
IWL
Howden
Gibson
Savea
TJP
Morgan
Rayasi
PUJ
Sullivan
Savea

BarrettYou can scratch Aumua, he's been suspended for three weeks (post that Highlanders game) and still has two weeks left. Otherwise, looks like a solid team to me.

I'm afraid you're probably right. A little too late for Holland I think....dilbert!

Brumbies
Scott Sio, Lachlan Lonergan, Sefo Kautai, Darcy Swain, Caderyn Neville, Rob Valetini, Jahrome Brown, Pete Samu, Nic White (c), Noah Lolesio, Andy Muirhead, Irae Simone, Len Ikitau, Tom Wright, Tom Banks
Reserves: Folau Fainga'a, James Slipper, Tom Ross, Tom Hooper, Luke Reimer, Ryan Lonergan, Hudson Creighton, Ollie Sapsford
-
@Duluth Banks is back, Canberra would be rocking if Ollie sapsford managed to score the winning Try
-
Pouri Rakete-Stones, James O'Reilly, Tyrel Lomax, James Blackwell, Justin Sangster, TK Howden, Blake Gibson, Ardie Savea (c), TJ Perenara, Jackson Garden-Bachop, Salesi Rayasi, Peter Umaga-Jensen, Bailyn Sullivan, Julian Savea, Jordie Barrett
Reserves: Kianu Kereru-Symes, Xavier Numia, Tevita Mafileo, Isaia Walker-Leawere, Caleb Delany, Jamie Booth, Aidan Morgan, Billy Proctor
-
@Duluth Bloody geezus, IWL was one of the better Canes and he gets demoted to the bench! I like Sangster, but you don't demote IWL to make room for him in the starting XV. But Blackwell ... grrrrrr
Edit to add that considering who the Canes presumably have available, this is probably the best possible squad apart from lock. I'm not a JGB fan and he's slow, but I think he's slightly calmer under pressure than puppy Morgan. Probably the same at hooker.

You’d think we would want all the size in the world against a strong Brumbies pack. Could be a bit of rotation maybe? IWL has been involved in every game since he came back hasn’t he? Atleast Prinsep isn’t there lol.
@Duluth where did you find the team announcement for the Canes? Odd that it isn’t up on any of their socials yet…
-
@Canes4life IWL has played 200 minutes. He shouldn't need a rest, yet. He just got going after a long injury break.
-
@Stargazer yeah, plus they could have rested
him next week anyway. Ffs Holland. Why couldn’t Sangster replace Blackwell instead. -

The Hurricanes don’t post too much about injuries to players but from this post you can see that Prinsep is already back in NZ, joining Love, Moorby, Coles, Flanders and Kirifi in the broken ward, including the suspended Aumua.
-
Has Holland finally settled on a midfield? We can only hope.
Funny how 90% of fans would have told him that's his midfield post the Blues game, but he needed another month to figure it out himself!
Do you think when he picks the team Ardie or Blackwell is 1st choice? lol.
A Scrafton/IWL/Sangster combo would be so much better.
Apart from that, I like the team although like most I'd have Morgan at 10 given Love is injured.

Do you really think any coach in rugby reall knows or cares what fans think. I mean I quite sue non of them are dumb enough to think before naming a team, Oh hang on I better check what the posters think on Silver Fern??

It's seemed a large %age of the fans were happy with Jordie in the midfield too?

Well - all fans like Jordie and PUJ, so either is good. Although I think we'd agree that having them both on the park is a better option?
I don't mind Jordie, Sullivan with Moorby at full back. But not having PUJ would be dumb.

PUJ could squeeze into the team as a winger (although there's other good options). He's not linking well at the moment, playing as a finisher might help his form
Someone mentioned Moorby was injured. I wonder if the Canes will go back to Jordie in the midfield when he's back?
-
Hmm, not sure I agree re: PUJ - I think his short passing is really good. And he threatens the line with an offload game.
I can't see a wing spot, all of Rayasi, Goosen & J Savea are playing well.

It's the decision making of when to pass, when to have a crack etc. He's a long way behind Sullivan as a 13 on current form
12? I don't think he's better than Jordie, but now he's needed at fullback

I think we can all agree that:
PUJ, Sullivan, Jordie
or
Jordie, Sullivan, MoorbyAre better than the other chopping and changing midfields Holland has used earlier in the season.

The Hurricanes have finally named their squad (officially).
Here's the media release:
Unavailable for selection due to injury or suspension: Asafo Aumua, Du'Plessis Kirifi, Devan Flanders, Ruben Love, Owen Franks, Dane Coles, Brayden Iose, Reed Prinsep, Pepesana Patafilo.

Has he? To me he’s been very up and down.
-
@Canes4life As much as I love Colesy it doesn’t look like he’s going to get a run at this stage were 2/3 the way through the comp.
-
I was pleased to see PUJ play well last week and so stay in this week, hope he keeps it up, another who I thought went well was Adam Gibson, so pleased to see him there again (even if only because of injury), he plays a bloody good game at 7. Also good to see Howden getting another run.
-
@mikey07 I hope we see Colesy at some point, he always helps the Canes take their game up a notch purely by the way he plays. Who knows, he may make a surprise return against the Drua next week.
-
@ACT-Crusader he had a mare against the Landers but he's been very good otherwise in my eyes.

A big thing for Rayasi is he needs to get involved more. More often than not he just waits for the action to come his way.
-
@Canes4life He gets a lot of touches with Auckland, but we probably game plan for him to get more touches because he's our best attacker.

Agree. In the meantime its good to have James O'Reilly back and starting. Something that I thought I wouldn't say before the year kicked off. Im surprised that he is our third hooker. I thought he only made the squad as an injury replacement

it's also a bit easier at NPC level to get him more touches - Super being that level above it's not so simple.

From the players available in the squad looks a pretty good starting 15... except would have Sangster/Walker-Leawere as the locking pair, also J.Savea needs to wake up & be far more alert in defense on the flanks.
-
@NZbloke He loves jamming in then has to try catch the winger when he gets the ball.

The bloke needs to read play better knowing when to drift across or come forward quickly... also gets caught out flat footed a lot because he sits back on his heels too much.
-
An update from Holland including why Walker-Leawere was dropped to the bench.
-
“It was a pretty nasty injury he got playing for [Wellington club side] Clive a year or so ago ..

The Canes can really help the Blues today
A Canes win that denies the Brumbies a bonus point would leaves the Blues 5 points ahead of second place
-
Ok, lowering a few IQ points.
“Go Chiefs!”
No, not enough. 100 more;
“Go Canes!”
Perfect.
