U85kg games were always my favorite to referee.

Super fast games played with high skill levels and normally were in good spirits.

I had assumed it would be like 15 angry halfbacks on both teams.

PRESS RELEASE: 2023 New Zealand Under 85kg Selection
At the conclusion of the Under 85kg National Club Cup, the NZ Barbarian Rugby will again proudly put together a New Zealand Under 85kg Selection. The team will be selected from players playing in the Under 85kg National Club Cup, and players currently playing in a local under 85kg competitions. The team will be announced post the conclusion of the 2023 National U85kg Knockout Cup.
A selection committee is currently being formed, with representatives across the provincial unions involved with the grade and National Competition being included. The player nomination process is currently being confirmed, and will be sought in the coming weeks.
While no formal games have been confirmed (this is initially a paper selection), the ambition of this process is to begin building the foundations of a national pathway for our Under 85kg players, and aid future possible initiatives with talent identification.
With the growing interest and profile for Under 85kg rugby in New Zealand, we are optimistic for what the future may hold in terms of international and domestic competition for a National Under 85kg team.
NZB President Craig Glendinning states "The NZ Barbarian Rugby Club is excited by the continued growth of weight restricted rugby and proud to once again name a selection team of the best players involved in the Under 85kg National Cup. Weight Restricted Rugby provides the opportunity for a greater number of players to remain involved in our great game. It is not uncommon for players to continue to play into their late 30s and in many instances the players continue their love of the game, once retired, by taking administrative positions within their clubs."

U85 rugby is such an incredible concept and i am all for anything that furthers it.

In the late 90s/early 2000s when players started getting bigger and bigger, how many people would have just quit the game? Anything that keeps people playing code is a good thing and should be pushed at every opportunity

It's about that time the grade started in Auckland I think. I had known of it back in 2001.

I played in the Akl comp back in 1994/95. They also had an U77kg grade. It was quite well policed with a flying squad doing the rounds each Saturday to randomly weigh players.

I ditched prem rugby for my last season to be with Eastbourne in my last year in NZ and fuck it was good. So much harder than I thought it was gonna be and actually set me up for being a crash bash midfielder in the UK. Plus breaking the line and getting chased down by props suuuucks.

They don't have an existing 85's comp so it is probably all of the good little guys in the province, not just the club.

@Bones Didn't Tukapa make the final either last year or the year before that?
