The Browns had a pretty good day. They got Garrett, Peppers and Njoku and picked up another 1st round pick for next year.

Yeah but they're the Browns. They'll fuck it up.

I agree. If it wasn't the Browns, that'd be a helluva haul.

All jokes aside, I like how they're doing things right now. They know they're not good enough yet, so they're just accumulating picks. It's a smart way to rebuild a team with lots of holes.

It's also a smart way to accumulate enough draft capital to trade for a Jimmy G, Cousins or up in the draft for a first round QB next year (which is supposedly much stronger at the QB position than this year's draft).

They will likely get a high pick next year too, so if they're lucky, they might not need to trade up to draft their favorite QB. They're smart not reaching for a QB this year, even though it's a glaring need, but the value just isn't there. With their analytical approach now, they're going to go for guys who match or exceed the value of the pick.

Browns took QB DeShone Kizer in the second round so seems like he is their guy. Was hoping he would fall into the third and 49ers could create the storyline of picking another Notre Dame QB in the third (last was Joe Montana).

Good value for the 2nd round. Some had Kizer as the best QB of the draft, although that might not be saying much.

They still have two 1st rounders and three 2nd rounders next year, so they could still draft a QB next year if Kizer isn't quite up to.

49ers make another good pick in the 3rd round - CB Ahkello Witherspoon from Colorado. He's 6'3 and one of the many DBs in this draft who can be a starter from game one.

49ers trade up and take Iowa QB CJ Beathard. Great name but questionable pick. Probably better to wait until the 4th round but hey, what do I know. Best to stick with the Shanaplan.

Yeah at least Shanahan is picking a qb for his system which will be around for a while. It's a system fit.

@KiwiMurph At least they are stockpiling picks. They got a second round pick in 2018 from the Vikings. Seems they will wait on Kirk Cousins and if that doesn't work out, draft a QB in next year's stronger class. Beathard is probably there to be the career backup like a Tony Banks or Curtis Painter.

@Sneakdefreak completely agree. Smart move. I also like the fact theyve picked a smart QB coming out of a pro style system in college too - which is quite rare these days - a much easier transition into a complicated Shanahan offense.

Watching some of the Bowl games over the Christmas break. Louisiana Tech V Navy was a great game (48 - 45). Louisiana Tech WR Trent Taylor had something like 233 yards and 2 TDs. He's going to be a late round draft pick (only 5'8) in next year's draft but looks like the next Wes Welker or TY Hilton. Bet the Pats pick him.

Nope the 49ers select Trent Taylor in the fifth round and get the steal of the draft! woohoo! Great overall draft by San Francisco but now its about getting the best of the undrafted bunch, as they tend to fill out the rest of your roster (with some becoming elite players).

@canefan The best WR in college football last year. Undersized but is damn elusive. His WR team mate Carlos Henderson went to Denver in the third round but Taylor is the better player.
Could be the next Wes Welker or Julian Elderman but apparently he just wants to be the next Trent Taylor:

As a 5’8 white wide receiver, guess who Trent Taylor has been compared to?

The answers are obvious but Taylor just want to be his own guy

If his name was Corey Davis, I'd agree with this.😃

Very long but very interesting article by legendary US journalist Peter King on being inside the 49ers draft room last weekend. Worth a read.

Trades to move up, deals to slide down and the selection of a player not even on the board. John Lynch’s first draft had everything, including historical parallels that gave the rookie GM goose bumps. How it all went down, plus notes on best picks, the Bears’ rationale and more from Philly

Never heard this about the last draft pick before, thought it was pretty funny. The best part " you don't know any Polynesians do you?".
