The Struggle Continues......
-
The front row is glorious fun though! no idea why so many try and avoid it. A mean hit and a big shove in the scrum feels just like a slick double skip, wrap around - waaaay better than your garden variety 1/2 cut!!

vanity...I was a loosie anyways! <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I played number eight five times in 2nd Division Valley club footy, that stint also coincided with my ten minute stint at tighthead lock!

When I played at eight nobody could get over how much more mobile I had suddenly become around the field. In fact I was no fitter at all.

The difference was I could finally move quickly because my legs no longer felt like jelly after scrummaging at prop.

Graham Purvis who was never the most mobile prop in the world to me his philosophy was if he pushed with all his might every scrum of the game then eventually his opponent would tire and
Be less effective around the field.

Purvy said the best example of this tactic was one game he marked Steve Hotton. Apparently Hotty was so stuffed he went back to the hotel after the game and was fast asleep by 7pm!

Rightly or wrongly I adopted Purvys strategy throughout my club footy. And it was effective. Once you start buckilng the other teams scrum the sting suddenly goes out of their phase play! -
as I grew up I was a #6 trapped in a halfbacks body, it wasnt until I matured and played 1st 15 rugby, we had a FAB at 9, so I had to move...I think I have played every position on the field, except the front row (although does 7's count)

I played a season at halfback in the sixth form.... our backs never saw the ball. And I played one game at centre that year scoring two tries from halfway.

Came on late in a forth form trial game at first five! Had my first clearing kick charged (not sure if it even left my foot), the opposition scored and I was pulled from the field. Actually come to think of it I did play blindside when I was 14. We had a teacher/coach from Natal and he used to take us to his place at lunchtime to watch Currie Cup videos!!!

Other than those exceptions I have only played 1,2 or 3!!!! -
Classic RB - I lasted half a game at second five at school level (4th of 5th form I think). Was playing loose forward at the time, and coach thought a hard straight running 12 would be a good idea. I think the rest of the backline, and the coach thought maybe I was better suited to a single digit jersey after 40 minutes, and that was my last foray into blouse territory...

and yup, going from 1 2 or 3 into a loose forward jersey makes life soo much easier. Not seeing stars when you come up and half to run to a breakdown 20 metres away is so much easier. even between prop and hooker there is a hell of a lot of difference. -
Mentioning Bill Cavubati yet again ( gee he gets good traction on this forum ) but I remember back in the 90's thinking how much better he was than Loe and Brown simply cos he ran with the ball so much more. The reason he was in a position to do so was cos he'd missed the last ten phases of play.....I've learnt so much since then....

Although ask M4L he'll still say I don't know shit.....

Guys like Bull Allen, Nick Poppelwell, David Sole, Tom Smith ( like how I've mentioned two Scotsmen in a row ), Sona Taumalolo etc seem to be those guys who were/are so good with ball in hand. Is that cos they're in the less arduous prop position ? Only tighthead like that I can think of is Kees Meeuws..... -

Craig Stevenson - Graeme Purvis

Steve McDowell - John Drake

Bull Allen - Gordy Slater

Carl Hoeft and Kees Meeuws were the opposite, but they did come in pairs...
Nick Popplwell - Peter Claw Chloessy
David Sole - Bear Milne
Frank Tournaire - Christian Califano -

If you're dominating as a unit, it's less effort per man to be on the winning team. You have more energy left for the other stuff.

For example, anyone who propped with BBBT in their second row had a high likelihood of being around the park a bit. Not a guarantee mind - you still have to hold up your end of things. -

by god you're needy...

If you can get any frilly bits out of your tighthead, then its a bonus in my opinion.

For JCU i have played at least 10 minutes in every position on the field bar 2, 3, and 10. Loosehead was when the game was forced to golden oldies scrums, and the high numbers seem like a lifetime ago.
