Someone catch me up. What is wrong with Dutton? I know very little of him outside of his interest in assisting the South African farmers pre-potential genocide/starvation
Nothing, apart from his unfortunate personal appearance. Nick uses Nazi references because he doesn't like borders and enjoyed the RAN shuttle service.

Jesus , how did it get to this point? What a shambles
Turnbull's insistence on running a Statesman like campaign. So he didn't attack Labor on their policies and it became a knife edge result. Which left him no room to tell recalcitrants to behave themselves. He's been limping along ever since.
What opportunities did come his way, Abbott has managed to ruin. Every. Single. Time.
Revenge. He fucked up Abbott's shit. Karma.
Abbott fucked himself. Knighthoods ffs.
Sure but Lord Wentworth white-anted him the entire time. Grahame Richardson was saying how Turnbull begged him to get on the Labor senate ticket back in the day. The guy doesn't give a shit about his party or the country, just himself.
True of a number of politicians. Abbott could easily be a right wing Labor politician. Pyne selected a party based on the ease with which he could become a parliamentarian. Do you think Shorten cares about the working man?
Most of them use the preferences and ignorance of the common voter to advance their own ambitions.

He's an ex-Queensland copper who has overseen a massive consolidation of power into one portfolio, kind of like a budget version of Homeland Security with ever increasing powers. E,g, the government now wants to be able to imprison you for up to a decade if you don't unlock your phone.

I don't know about that. Certainly not these days. And of course most politicians are self-serving, but Turnbull takes that to another level. He's just Kevin Rudd but with perhaps some actual principles.
Turnbull's problem is that his electorate is purple and his policies need to reflect that or else he's toast. The rest of the country is not Point Paaiiper.

@rembrandt when even a subset of the Liberal Party echo chamber won't support him in the face of the government's failure under Abbott and now Turnbull, it's clear he's not even well liked there; the closest thing he had to a safe space.
As for what I think is wrong with him - the unfortunate personal appearance doesn't help, but that's not his fault and shouldn't be the focus.
What he lacks is:
-
Charisma.
-
Ability to win his seat by more than a handful of votes.
-
Enough hardline right boomers in both the party and the electorate who will put up with his shit.
-
Ability to handle the increasingly large Ministerial portfolios he was given
-
Attachment to previous failed Prime Minister Tony Abbott (great in opposition as a barking dog, but a shit guy to run a country)
-
Support for gay marriage, Aboriginal rights, or immigration by pretty much anyone other than white people
The failed leadership challenge being probably the final straw.
The country's political scene at both state and federal levels is going to shit at a rate of knots, because most of them on both sides of the table aren't in it for anyone but themselves.
Dutton is no worse than a lot of the others. But all of them are worse than we need.
Here, this should give you all you need to know about our politicians:

Cheers all, gives me some context.
Still only really like Leyonhjelm from what I've seen on the media and Kevin Bailey from chatting in person.
If you like Leyonhelm you should read Catallaxyfiles.com. A dedicated libertarian website with a range of views. Leyonhelm is a regular contributor. The comments section is often hilarious.

How about the ex-SAS dude? He could be a winner. Imagine him beside Shorten.

That's a good question. I'd go with get a job where you're not sucking from the public tit.
-
@antipodean I'd have one of two responses to it:
-
don't be a useless dickhead, and fight dickhead party leadership whenever you can instead of just following blindly.
-
go get one of those jobs that apparently our politicians would NOT be overpaid doing if they stayed in private industry because they're so awesome and not just party spawn
-
-
Turnbull is toast ,
-
With Mathias saying his position is untenable, Turnbull is gone. When even your backers are saying it, you need to recognise the numbers are against you.

Can't see the electorate embracing Dutton and given how most of the media seems to think the RAN shuttle service and dead bodies in the sea is good policy, they'll look to crucify him. The fact he looks like Roger from American Dad doesn't help.

People used to say that about Howard and Abbott. He just needs time to soften his image and come up with populist policies.

well, he's going to take the GST off your power bill...

@mariner4life I still want my $550 saving as well! PLUS the last $550 saving Abbott promised me when he ditched the carbon tax.
Dutton was voted worst Health Minister of the last 35 years by the medical fraternity. He'll be equal-worst PM with Turnbull if he gets there.
Best thing Turnbull can do now is quit parliament altogether and ride off on his golden unicorn. No majority probably forces an election sooner rather than later.
