Incidentally the movie wasn't great (IIRC it also had Christian Bale in it before he was huge) but it's better than the gobshite awful book it's based on. Why use one sentence to say a ball is round when you can use 43 paragraphs!
fark why the hell would you read that book, I only watched the movie out of interest because it had been made a year or so prior to me visiting the Island.
It's marketed as a good book, it may have been recommended to me, and I used to read lots back then ... now I would have got a few pages in and just turfed it.
CC's Mandolin? I liked it. Never watched the movie though as heard it was rubbish
I can't stand his writing style, it's overblown (I don't like overly verbose language) which I thought was a translation issue until I realised he was English. @SammyC as CCM was the first book of his I came across I haven't attempted any others.

Fair enough. I don't really get into styles etc. I just like a story or I don't. I don't think I'm a decent marker mind you as my favourite books of all time are the Harry Potter series

I guess I am basing my opinion of what the book might be like based on the movie (I know often movies suck compared to books, even if the book is way better, doesnt really strike me as the kind of book I would ready anyway)

Same here, have enjoyed all Louis de bernieres books.
What was that one set in some South American dictatorship? That was good, but very out there.
There's 3 of them (I think)
The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts, Señor Vivo and the Coca Lord and The Troublesome Offspring of Cardinal Guzman. Kind of based on Pinochet in Chile from what I recall.
I probably enjoyed these more than CCM.
He's definitely got a unique writing style which makes the books a bit harder to get into, but I find that once I was into them I enjoyed it. Similar to reading Irvine Walsh when he writes in the Scottish accent.

I've only read two Harry Potter books but IIRC they were quite well written.

@Nepia yeah red dog (and the prequel, blue dog) prob my least favourite of his books.
Is the movie any good? I saw a trailer of it by accident (I have a no trailers rule) and it didn't look like a movie I'd like to see.

never seen it either, I haven't seen CCM either. (should probably remove myself from this discussion given it is the movie review thread)

I've just read the synopsis of this movie
This might be the gayest thread diversion ever.

They've been advertising the hell out of Us on TV here. Looks like some spine-tingling shit. Difficult to find a proper scary film and that certainly looks like one.
