Who’s going to stand up for us drunkards and fornicators?
-
Ultimately beliefs including religious ones change over time and they should reflect societies norms and values. I'm pretty sure Christianity found the bible was ok with slavery as blacks were sinful etc etc. Once society no longer deemed slavery moral the church changed their interpretation of the bible.
I would like to believe society has now accepted that homosexuality is not a choice and is definitely not a sin. Therefore society no longer tolerates hateful discriminatory speech towards Homosexuals regardless if it was once interpreted that way. This is why you don't see every other religious celebrity shouting Gays are going to hell.
Folau would have to be stupid not to understand the implications of his actions.

He's refused to compromise, he's blocking calls from the coach, he's not answering his door when RA staff come to his house.
Probably as a result of legal advice considering he'd been told he was going to be sacked and then had to front a code of conduct hearing.

You're speaking about a bloke that's given up a $4million contract to quote bible passages...

How would RA deal with it again hindsight?
Call it a potential breach of the code of conduct and that the parties would deal with it rather than state the outcome and hastily convene a mechanism to achieve it?
If this does progress as it certainly looks it will, one thing to keep in mind in the panel may have been looking at specifically whether his actions breached the code of conduct - not whether it itself has any force. It all depends on their brief.

Not just any bible passages. A stuff article reported that his religious themed social media posts have been on the increase over the last couple of years and no one at RA said a thing. He only crossed the line with two posts and that's how he finds himself in the position he's in. So RA have been tolerant of his views and his expression of those views.
I think i read that Polynesians make up 45% of RA players? Was that at rep or Super level and higher? Am I free to assume, because no one else has been called out like this, that all of those other players of faith have not seen fit to spread anti-social religious based views in public?
-
@canefan I think because many of them have some sense of intelligence, that is they may think gays are going to hell but realise it is no longer socially acceptable to say things like that. They also are generally sending love messages, not hate. They often have passages on their arms and make a gesture to the sky, I have no issue with that, the issue is the hate and discrimination.
Without knowing anyone religious personally, I would assume many religious peoples views on homosexuality have drastically changed in the last 30 years. I think this is mainly due to all of us knowing many homosexuals personally(Who would have kept their sexuality hidden previously). Our relationships have shown us that gay people deserve to be treated fairly and without discrimination no matter a persons religion. My brother is gay and who is it for Folau to say he is going to hell, it is so arbitrary it is ridiculous and I feel sorry for anyone who cannot think freely for themselves.
In fact I listened to a podcast recently that said public opinion on homosexuality was one of the fasted changing public opinions ever. 30 years ago I think less than 10% were in favour of gay marriage, today it is close to 70% and that even includes the older generation. Apparently bias tests have also shown that unconscious bias has drastically dropped to a point they think in the next decade it will be negligible. Whereas racism, elder and sexism will take many years to eradicate.
Whilst RA may not have handled this case wonderfully I am happy they have sent a message saying discrimination and hate towards homosexuals will not be tolerated.

Fool'ows contract had no relevant clauses in it due to the CBA with the players association. RAs hands were tied on that front

If that's true then they should never have taken the chance. Foonpow could have looked Nessa from Gavin and Stacey right in the eyes and promised to be a good boy, but they should have done more due diligence. I reckon they wouldn't even have to scratch the surface to find out that his world view flies completely in the face of RA's inclusion policy.
Actually having recently taken a more in-depth look at Twitter I think any organisation should ban any employee who uses it. What an absolute sewer.

They saw their best player and thought they could control it. Epically wrong. Twitter is the perfect vehicle for idiots who can't process information of more than 280 characters

All of that happened in the day after the tweet itself, before RA signalled their intent to sack him.

RA might think they get to decide what is "crossing the line", which Bible passages are acceptable or which player views to tolerate. Mr Follow thinks otherwise.
The reality is it's probably going to be the Supreme Court who decides.
