Don't see the point in going to the expense and hassle of being a republic when we are effectively one apart from our womenfolks bizarre interest in the royal family and their weddings and kids .

I'd be interested in Red Terror adding to this thread about what happened in Canada when they changed their flag which from memory was after ww2.

I believe the old flag is still frequently used by veterans and flies together with the current one at Canadian War Memorial.

Ultimately, this is all about people having issues with the Union Jack. I'm no fan of Poms but have no problem with it. Reminds us how lucky we are that it wasn't the French, Spanish or Portuguese who colonised the place.

If the flag is outdated and the country apparently needs to evolve, then what about the name of the country? It's named after a part of Holland ffs. -

I agree. However I'm not sure that the Southern Cross is what is representative of NZ either.

are there Kiwis looking up into the night sky seeing the stars and getting this overwhelming feeling of patriotism :)

Actually looking up at the night sky gives me a feeling of "home".

Admittedly I do more of it here in Qld than I did in NZ... -

I agree with this. But I agree with the need to differentiate our flag from Australia's (union jack + southern cross). Our identify NZ as being like Australia, but a bit a different.

We had our flag first. They copied us -

I actually don't get why people don't want to take the opportunity to change or dated and meaningless flag. It isn't like this chance is going to come up whenever we want it. I'm supporting change despite it being a Johnkey vanity project because if we don't we'll continue to be stuck with the flag of another country stuck in the corner of our flag.
This is a chance to show an identity of our own.
Thinking about the options, the one with the black in the corner is looking better and better. It is actually quite striking and in a way is very relevant, showing a new country emerging from its colonial past.
My approach to this has always been that if a good option comes up then I'll vote for it.

I don't accept that our current flag is meaningless. It has a meaning. It's part of our heritage and I for one am proud of it. I do however lean towards updating it. I like the fernn and southern cross motif. Just the colors are the issue IMO. BUT we'll rip ourselves to shreds in the interim ... -

Yeah but we kind of ripped of one of their flags to get ours.

At the end of the day the Australian flag has more exposure and if the current one is retained we will always be seen as a variant of it overseas.
-

The flag discussion?

Nothing. It's possible to have multiple things going on at the same time, and I like that we are at least having the discussion about national pride and how we express that. Even if it means we end up chosing the existing flag, it's worth it IMO.

I'd rather change the bloody anthem though.
-

Every time there's discussion over here about flags or republics you know someone wants the media and public not to focus on something else.

My response is always the same; what difference will it make? However I'm all for getting rid of dirges for anthems. Something like

The TPPA has been talked about publicly for several years now, yet people still insist it's being buried/distracted from/under reported in the media about every second week...

There has been and still is plenty of commentary on it. If people don't have the attention span to get past the first three click bait articles on Stuff, then that's just a reflection on their attention span rather than anything more sinister.

That doesn't work in the modern age, particularly as peoples attention span is 30secs these days.

Individuals might have attention spans that short, but the media loves to beat a story to death.

All I'm saying is every time I've seen such issues raised by the Government in Oz, it's never coincided with their greatest policy announcements. :D
