I don't think your average fern reader is likely to be influenced too much by celeb wankery..too old grumpy and cynical for that. Family, significant others, students, graduates, HR departments, certain politicians, government departments and PMs however...
Outside of vaccines and tourism already mentioned, I'd add in transgender children, propagation of identity politics, freedom restrictions (how long before we get that meat tax?), support and cover for extremist ideologies, economic consequences to those already struggling due to ridiculous feeling based decision making from folk who think twitter is real life.
So I get great pleasure seeing the tide turn publicly against these singing & dancing puppets of faux virtue. They are of course entitled to their opinions, its just now the public are entitled to point out how ridiculous they are.

I didn't know there was such a thing as an average ferner... Just a bunch of above average athletes struck down by alcohol, girls and gambling and some mysterious injury just before they cracked it into the professional rugby ranks.

but I'd go to Snowy for tailoring advice
Reminds me of the "you fuck one goat" joke.
I spent 30 years and 20,000 hours as an aviator, but around here I'm just the bloke who makes clothing out of people, so yes my hobby in "fashion" seems to appeal to you lot more. I'm happy to lend advice should you want any Dogmeat. I'm sure that you know people that deserve it. The older I get, the more of them I meat (yes, deliberate).

Thought you would never read a more humourless, woke response to Ricky Gervais' monologue at this year's Golden Globes than the one in the Independent. The team at the Guardian want you to hold their tofu sandwich:

@Hooroo ah but when he wins big - only a matter of time - he'll be able to pay you back....
Been a year.... and seen him collect a $500 trifecta sitting right next to me. Not even a mention.
I still didn't learn either as he was looking for work and he is a great horseman. I offered him a weekend trip all expenses paid (obviously) + wedge of cash and he said great, keen as. Day before we were going to Wellington he pulled pin. I was livid but more at myself for trying to help!
I'm a slow learner but I have learnt on that case now.
Still, his 18yo female replacement was particularly easy on the eye...

Yet to watch any of the clips, I really went off Ricky years ago, I don't like any of his stand up anymore and by the sound of it I won't like any of jokes this year either. Think it's a "getting older" thing...
However, I loved him in "the office" and on Karl Pilkingtons idiot abroad series, he is like a naughty little boy winding up his mate which I think is more the "real" him.I prefer gentle teasing really. Nice soft harmless comedy.

Like many on this thread I understand the actors and celebrities being out of touch, pontificating from the lectern as they receive their relatively meaningless awards. Of course they aren't connected to the real world, how could you be when you earn that much money and live in a totally different universe?
I find it far harder to give the same leeway to journalists like old mate here, and the others on the thread. The job of a journalist isn't to reflect the opinions of the masses per se, but it's definitely not a good thing to be this disconnected from where people are. Not only did they not like Gervais, but the reason they didn't like him is exactly the reason that almost everyone did.
It's symptomatic of the wider disconnect between the hard left journos and publications, and the opinions of the wider populace in the UK and US. Not sure we have the same problem yet here (although there certainly are nutters out there) but it could happen.

I like how he pivoted and perfectly aimed his cannon at another group richly deserving of ridicule.

Allow me to introduce you to the Spinoff
Here’s a good article to kick it off with . The sight of Glee on my tv usually resulted in me grabbing the remote and finding something, anything else to watch but from what I recall it had loads of openly gay characters ( some tidy lezzos too) , a kid in a wheelchair a ridiculous amount of ethnics , fat chicks and probably a load of other ott woke garbage I fortunately missed .
10 years on its “ problematic”.
NZ website of the year apparently.
Ffs.

Yep. Pretty out of touch.
I remember the day when they were "reporters", told the story, didn't make any social comment on it, or opine. Always has been two sides of course, but it up to the individual to chose which side and the "journalist" isn't there to sway the public. Sadly we have the Murdoch's of this world (along with his minions) who choose a side and then try and influence others.

@Kirwan I obvs don't have the numbers, but I wouldn't have thought it would be sky high for people who would have otherwise vaxed their kids deciding not to because of some celeb? Def not zero, but not crazy numbers either?
When Oprah has Jenny McCarthy on fapping about how a vaccine caused her sons autism I think that has a huge reach .
If only Oprah could put her powers to good use “ tonight on a very important Oprah , how a ffm threesome would improve your relationship with your husband “ or similar.
Yeah no doubt Oprah has some unique reach. But I'd still maintain celebrities are just a small subset of the world's fckwits mouthing off (don't get me started on religion). I'm absolutely ok to mock the shit out of them, and I love Rickys work, but I generally can't really get that worked up over it

Looking forward to Ricky Gervais giving CPAC the same treatment. Not sure they will be as welcoming or understanding.

@booboo Annual shindig of the American Conservative Union.

I doubt these days as many of them would laugh along to Ricky Gervais taking the piss out of them as Golden Globes audience did on Sunday.
