we're all working off 6 months.
what if it is more?
At what point do the restrictions relax? What is the trigger point?
we're closed now. we may never re-open.
I'm going riding across Oz in just over four months. Can't get much more self-isolation than that.
Time for some heartless maths. So far Italy has less than 0.01% of the population succumb to Covid 19. If we applied the same statistics to Australia we'd see ~2,400 people die. Most of them old.
If we apply the figure from @JC of US$7 million, that's less than thirty billion dollarydoos at current exchange rates. And people could go back to work.
The idea that we're going to close down the economy for six months is the stuff of lunatics. Doubly so if they think their economic stimulus will save anything. How can you save the economy if people aren't permitted to go out?
-
the stimulus announces thus far is wildly insufficient for us. It appears targeted at businesses that are down a bit on last year, say 50% of turnover. Our industry as it stands is looking at zero revenue for however long.
Getting to keep the PAYG you should be remitting (up to $50k for 3 months) is not going to cut it. Especially when you are paying $50k in one month.

@raznomore @mariner4life and the others based in Aussie who will be out of work, I feel for you guys, all the best and I hope this blows over quickly.
I guess I'm lucky in that I'm in Higher Ed and we can go to online teaching, fees are either paid in advance or on a govt schedule so for the time being I'm sweet.
I went into the office to collect some things today and Darling Harbour was a deadzone on my walk. Nothing was open, I guess they're not geared towards takeaways. In the city (Wynyard) it was surprisingly busy, with lots of food places open for takeaways. I haven't been into the office in 11 days so I wasn't sure what to expect.
Due to the Federal govt lockdown measures being less than initially thought we get the option to come into the office or work from home. I'm going to work from home mainly due to the aircon at work which I hate.
I will have the busiest two weeks of my job ever while we're on the teaching hiatus and setting up online teaching. Trying to buy microphones and webcams is like trying to buy toilet paper.

I'm not out of work. Yet.
But if it goes too long....

So I had a job interview today, at start every person in the room declared they had not been overseas recently, were not sick and had not been in contact with anyone who had. No handshaking and distance kept. All very strange. You could easily lie I guess but good policy to have.
-
@Nepia I was wondering what happens to all those overseas students that pay a fortune. If uni is closed for 6 months do they get a refund? Are you part way through a semester? Do they all go home?
I also feel for Year 12/13 doing final exams this year, if you are not at school for 6 months it makes it hard come exam time.

We don't have a lot of International students and as far as I know none of the ones we do have gone home. But, it's highly unlikely they could get a refund, once you stay past census date that's usually it, no refunds. However, if we had an actual shutdown and students couldn't study then I suspect we would give refunds. But even if they have returned to their home countries now they'll still be able to complete the semester online.
We're only a couple of weeks into the semester and a few weeks back we set out plan for a two week break and then online courses which is what we're doing. Our finance manager didn't approve the tech equipment we wanted so we're not going to have the topline microphones we wanted.
Good luck with your job hunt.

I don't like this
Are we potentially looking at food delivery places closing? I would have thought having a few key McDonalds open with uber eats delivery would do pretty well in this situation. I got uber eats last night and saw an option for the first time 'Leave at the door' seems logical.

This drive through only KFC is looking like a genius idea around now. In Newcastle NSW.
that's amazing!!!
-
is it callous to say Aus has performed 114,000 tests, identified 1,600 cases, had 7 deaths (really fucking old people too)
and based on those numbers alone this is going way too far?
Or am i being blinded by my personal situation?

Need to know numbers in hospital and number of beds available to answer that

In NZ, I have heard (From a vet of all people) that we have a ventilator for every 50,000 people. Aussie has one for every 2000 people.
I can't back that up in any way. It was merely a conversation.

Damn, takeaways are creaming it over here - I walked through Town Hall today and everyone was eating KFC. That's some crazy lock down.

Now that could explain the measures taken. Surely we must have some industry who can make these, I shared a FB group a while back where engineers were sharing cad drawings for this

That's what entered the back of my mind today. Maybe they have enough information to make these decisions.
