Drivers Licence Expiring During Lockdown!
-
Yep, had a calendar note last week to renew it as it expires in a couple of weeks. You might say I left this late but it's a 15 minute job and pretty much a formality so I thought when I calendarised it that a couple of weeks pre-expity would be plenty of time to get it sorted. Now it'll expire whilst in lockdown and I won't be able to legally drive when free again. Driver licensing agents are of course all clsoed, the NZTA call centre is regarded as non-essential and is therefore closed and an email to NZTA last week via their feedback section (apparently manned) remains as-yet unanswered.
Any ideas?

If things like regos and wofs are delayed until afterwards then licences will be as well. I assumed that details on how this will work will come out closer to the time when the backlog impact is known.
Could be as simple as if your licence expired 10 days into lockdown the you have 10 days after return to sort. -
I think you shold be fine, there are WOF's that will expire in this time too, although if a car has issues that would prevent it getting a WOF, this is different.
If you get pulled up I would say there is 0% chance you will get fined when going to sort this.
Similarly it will not affect your Insurance, as the Insurer would need ot prove that while you were driving without a licence, this 'breach' was causitive to the accident (ie, if your licence had been valid, would that accident still have occured)

From the NZTA website:
My driver licence has or is about to expire, can I still drive? We are currently working with Ministry of Transport to put in place formal regulation relating to driver licenses during the Level 4 Alert Period. Please check our website regularly for updates.

The NZTA joins the 21st century and you could renew online?
-
@antipodean it usually requires an eye test, that I assume cant be done online?

Regardless of age?

As far as I know, so they can endorse your licence accordingly.
Unless you can supply a recent eye exam showing you need (or dont) need glasses to drive, this could be done online, they also re-do your photo at this time too.

That is really interesting. I learnt something on the Fern!

@Baron-Silas-Greenback similarly if you have an expired WOF or Rego, this does not automatically invalidate your Insurance.
Sect. 11 of the Insurance Law Reform Act...you could be innocently driving down the road, drunk as fcuk, stop at the lights and someone rear-ends you and your Insurer has to pay...

Thankfully we only require eye testing for driver licences at ages 50, 60, 65, and 70. From age 75, full medicals are required annually.

Since I had good enough eyesight to fly fighters at 21, not good enough to drive by 25, I think it's a good idea to have eye tests for your licence.

Awesome, thanks.

So do I, for people statistically likely to have degradation significant enough to adversely affect their driving.
-
@antipodean it is only renewed every 10 years, so not unexpected that a good number of peoples eye sight will deteriorate in that time, whatever age.

Yes, but the point is to capture those whose visual acuity is likely to have declined enough to prevent them getting a licence.
-
@antipodean so are you saying peoples vision wont deteriorate sufficiently in 10 years to require testing?
I am not sure at what age it happens, but I believe it drops form 10 to 5 years too.

Visual acuity changes with age. The chart demonstrates that it is a mistake to consider 20/20 as “average,” “normal,” or “perfect” vision. The gray band indicates standard vision (20/20, 1.0). Average adult visual acuity is significantly better and does not drop to 20/20 until after age 60.

@antipodean well we have 2 examples in this thread that are at odds with that article that looks like it was done in 1995?...@Machpants and me, although mine somehow improved and then didnt require glasses at my next renewal.
