Waikato's Jacob Skeen has already played for the NZ Maori.

  • @Stargazer
    Blade Thompson still out injured?
    I forgot tom Franklin

  • Hoani Matenga played lock for Blues this year.

  • @Whites72 Blade Thompson is out for the season and Franklin is also injured at the moment (not sure for how long; according to media he has a "slight fracture in his lower leg").

  • Hika as captain? Ngatai was the captain last year.

Triggs, Thomson and Skeen were the locks last year. Finding a compeitive tight five will be the biggest problem.

  • So possible players by position.

Please correct me where I am wrong and someone is not available coz they've moved overseas and I've missed it.

I'll put who I understand is likely to be with the ABs or who is injured in brackets first.

Haven't watched a lot of M10 Cup but have thrown in a few blokes whose name has popped up in the odd game I have noticed. Again tell me if I'm wrong and these guys are no chance ... or are not Maori eligible. Ta

    1. Hames, Edmonds, D Lienert-Brown, Hohneck
    2. (Coles, Taylor) A Dixon, H Elliot, Q McDonald(?)
    3. Eves, May
    4. Skeen, H Matenga
    5. see 4
    6. (Squire, Dixon) Kirikiri
    7. Christie, K Prior, D Prior, M Crosswell
    8. (Squire, A Ioane(?)) Douglas, Bedwell-Curtis
    9. (Smith, Perenara, TKB) Hall, Smylie, Gibson-Park, Weber
    10. ( Cruden, D McKenzie) M McKenzie, West, Black, Sam Christie
    11. See 14
    12. See 13
    13. (ALB, R Ioane(?)) (Ngatai - unavailable) Emery,
    14. (Dagg, NMS (injured)) Proctor, Lowe (see also 15)
    15. (Dagg, NMS (injured)) Proctor, Lowe, Curtis

    Other injured players

    • Blade Thomson - injured
    • Tom Franklin - injured

Also, from ACTC's previous years lists I either dont know the current playing status of these guys or don't know the position they play.

    • Joe Royal (position? Hooker?)
    • Michael Kainga
    • Nick Barrett
    • Hayden Triggs (goorne?)
    • Mitch Crosswell (see he plays 7 for Naki ... edited above list)
    • Joe Wheeler
    • Nick Crosswell (goorne?)
    • Josh Hohneck (prop. Updated above
    • Heiden Bedwell-Curtis (8. Updated above)
    • Codey Rei
    • Sean Wainui
    • Sean Polwart (7?)
    • Kurt Baker
    • Joe Webber

  • Stepping through the week 9 playing squads thread a few other names pop up.

Not all teams named thereupon yet...

Please let me know if these guys are any chance and we'll update the possibility list.

    11/14 Caleb Makene
    11/14 Beaudein Waaka
    11/14 Declan O'Donnell
9 Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi (plenty halfbacks ... )
    4 Jackson Hemopo
    8 Heiden Bedwell-Curtis
11/14 & 12/13 Matt Faddes (is he Maori?)
    12/13 Teihorangi Walden
    6 Jordan Manihera

  • Possibilities from the Northland team (sorry they're the only games I've watched);
    Waa
    K Pryor
    D Pryor if fit
    Nock
    Tua

  • @booboo
1 Edmonds is injured; Josh Hohneck going to Gloucester
1/3 Mason Kean (NZU20 player, about the same level of experience as Makene)
2 Quentin MacDonald will not be available because he'll be heading to France where he's signed with Oyonnax; a contender might be Tangaere (justifiable if you also include Makene on that list)
8 Mikaele-Tu'u (NZU20 player, about the same level of experience as Makene, although younger)
9 Gibson-Parks is playing in Europe; if Smith doesn't go on the EOYT, Weber might not be available
10/12 Tiaan Falcon (contender for next year's NZU20)
11/13/14 Not sure which Lowe you have on your list (I assume you mean James Lowe), I'd definitely add Jonah Lowe who has been outstanding

From Act's lists: not sure Nick Barrett has played any Mitre 10 Cup this year; Triggs, Wheeler, Nick Crosswell, Codey Rei, Kurt Baker all gone overseas

  • @booboo I think ALB is Samoan not Maori.

    @Stargazer Same with Mikaele-Tu'u?

    Is Walker-Leaware injured?

  • @Nepia You may be right about Mikaele-Tu'u, although I vaguely remember reading somewhere he was part Maori, but that may be wrong.

  • @Nepia Lienert brown is actually maori according to google as is Sam mcnicol which I was surprised at

Yeah, not discounting that he is hence the question mark.

@Whites72 According to this article his Dad is Samoan, it doesn't say if his Mum is Maori which could be a possibility I guess.

  • @Nepia locks seem to be the biggest concern as not to many maori ones around

  • I read somewhere that the Leinert-Browns were part Fijian.

  • @Wurzel said in Nz maori:

Ha, reminds me of reading the Walter Little/Frank Bunce book. Little got selected for a Maori team then his Mum told him he couldn't play, he had to ring the coach and say "sorry, but I'm not Maori"

  • @Whites72 said in Nz maori:

Usually in conjunction with the EOYT team, so likely the Sunday following the Eden Park test.

I guess Frank Bunce's mum told him to keep his mouth shut when the Samoan coach called him up in 1991.

    Or not ... 🙂

  • Apparently Tim Bateman is a likely tourist. Back in Christchurch, sniffing around for a Crusaders contract, played for Tasman B the other day. Hardly done anything that warrants Maori selection but two articles I've ready this week have phrased it in such a way that it seems Tim is in the squad.

  • Some of Cooper's selections will be dependent on who makes the AB squad, e.g. R Ioane, DMac.

The midfield options seem to be lacking in experience and quality.

  • @Bovidae said in Nz maori:

    [Rieko Ioane (Blues/Auckland)]
    Jason Emery (Highlanders/Manawatu)
    Matt Proctor (Hurricanes/Wellington)
    Sean Wainui (Crusaders/Taranaki)
    Jonah Lowe (NZU20s/Hawke's Bay)

These players lack quality? Lowe is the only one lacking Super Rugby experience, but NPC players have been selected for the Maori side before without having played Super Rugby.

I don't agree with you at all.

  • I'd be playing Ioane on the wing not midfield.

    Is Proctor fit?

  • @ACT-Crusader said in Nz maori:

Proctor is recovering from a concussion. I guess it will depend on the seriousness of the concussion whether he'll be available for selection.

  • @Stargazer I don't see anyone in that list who could be considered a backline leader like Ngatai was last year.

Here was the Maori backline that played the Baabaas.

    1. Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 10. Marty McKenzie, 11. Matt Proctor, 12. Charlie Ngatai, 13. Sean Wainui, 14. Rieko Ioane, 15. Damian McKenzie.

So perhaps Proctor and Wainui would be the favoured midfield duo based on who is available this year.

The Baabaas backline and team were dominant in the game.
    9. Mitchell Drummond, 10. Tom Taylor (VC), 11. Patrick Osborne, 12. George Moala, 13. Seta Tamanivalu, 14. Cory Jane, 15. Andrew Horrell

Maybe that's why they might be considering Bateman, who has captained the team a few years ago.

  • Is Joe Tupe maori ? And Parete ?

  • @Wurzel I thought they were Samoan.
