Re: Movie review thread...

  • The Expendables

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1320253/

A bit of a whose who of action movies...

Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Bruce Willis. A few other names like Mickey Rourke, Eric Roberts, Brittany Murphy and Terry Crews. Some muscle bound non actors in Steve Austin and Randy Couture and even Governor Arnie makes an appearance.

Written and Directed by Sylvester Stallone and featuring character names like Tool and Toll Road it will be interesting to see how this one turns out!!

  • Actually that was a preview in a review thread. Apologies.

  • Gran Torino - Eastwood is the perfect grumpy old bastard. Good film, quite slow but enjoyable watching - 7/10

Notting Hill - Yeah, I know an old school rom com, but I hadnt seen it and Mrs MR was watching it. Enjoyed it actually! 6.5/10

  • Homicide - David Mamet film. A little bit disappointing (dialogue not as good as expected, plot a little simple/uneventful), but interesting to think about after. 7/10

The Getaway - Sam Peckinpah/Walter Hill adaption of the Jim Thompson book. Rather different than the book. Well shot etc, a little dull. 7/10

  • watched District 9 last night..

after reading the good reviews on it, I am not sure what I was expecting, but what I got, was certainly not anywhere near what I was expecting...that said, I still enjoyed it.

Left wide open for a sequel...even a prequel

I actually liked the remake of this starring a much slimmer Alec Baldwin, a still sexy Kim Basinger and the vastly underrated tough guy Michael Madseon....very entertaining.

Can I ask what you were expecting?

  • not what I got...

[spoiler:19k69wmr]a kind of mocumentary is not what I was expecting.

it just wasnt what i was expectin, still liked it, and I guess the underlying tones of SA's past of racism was the main part of it, even to a degree the Southern American segregation[/spoiler:19k69wmr]

  • Jennifers Body

Megan Fox lezzes up & goes demonic. I was expecting it to be utterly shit, but it was actually watchable. Needed to be a lot scarier, sort of falls between funny (intentionally) & scary, but not enough of either. The good joke lines sort of get lost a bit. And theres no hooters. Not even side-boob.

Think its got slagged a bit cause everyone is expecting Juno 2, and because people have sort of had enough of Fox.

Probably one to pick up on DVD when it gets in the bargain bin, or watch on Sky in a year

    6/10

  • Angel of Death; Zoe Bell, Lucy Lawless

Bell is a hit woman...never really notice Kiwi's accents much on TV, but by god hers is strong!!

    4/10 - poor really

I've actually been noticing Lawless' accent on BSG, it's mixed but very Kiwi.

Mogwai: I don't know how anyone could think Jennifer's Body could be anything like Juno going by the shorts.

  • Lucy was barely noticable, only a small role inthis film, but Bell's was very strong.

I think people expected the wittiness of juno because Diablo Cody penned both...

  • I have just seen what I think has been the best movie of the year so far. The Hurt Locker. Kicks. Fucking. Arse.

Hard to believe its a women director. Not that a women can't direct a war movie, just they don't usually.

She is James Cameron's ex though.

Have you seen 'Generation Kill' Razbra? The Hurt Locker has the same feel to me as the TV show - which is all good.

No I haven't I have heard about it though. If its anything like this Im into it.

When I first heard about Hurt locker My mate told me is was like Over There...which at the time I thought was a great show(lasted one season) but after watching this that show was pants. Like 90210 in the dessert.

    will do.

  • I just saw District 9 . It was ok to kill a couple of hours but i won't go out of my way to watch it again . 5/10

  • Hi CJ - did you watch at at the movies or on DVD (or a pireted version off the internet ) just that of the not so glowing reviews I've heard about D9 have been from people that hadn't seen it on the big screen, just wondering if something of the effect of the movie gets lost in translation??

  • Saw a bloody good thriller starring the ever awesome Samuel L Jackson as the kind of cop who would suck to have as a neigbour, "Lakeview terrace".....he sure isn't happy that the black woman who has just moved in isn't married to a "brother".....

SLJ is hilariously loud as always but also seriously menacing at the same time.

  • some of the stuff SLJ does was amusing!!

Saw G-Force - kids movie, with super hero Guinea Pigs...

TR Jnr liked, it, I thought it was pretty average for akids flick, even directed by Mr. Bruckheimer

You're a better Dad than me TR, NO WAY would I ever want to sit through shit like that !

Still by the time MN5 jr is old enough I'm sure he'll be keen to go to one of the inevitable sequels.....

  • was between that, and Up, sadly due to him getting a Guinea Pig for his birthday, G-Force won, as I have heard Up is superb.

Took the kids to the 3D version and can report ..take your kids before its gone! Excellent movie.

  • Funny People with Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen etc...

Really strong first hour then it fades. Hard.

The stand up comedy is really good, apparently the Director got them to write their own material. Sandler is really starting to get some good roles these days... wonder when/if we'll get Happy Gilmore 2 - The Tigers Tale!

    First half = 8/10
    Second half = 3/10

Yeah, it went from being an interesting funny film, to quite forumulaic.

Would have been better if [spoiler:280ukmgi]Sandler had died instead of getting better[/spoiler:280ukmgi]

  • Saw the Soloist the other night. Really strong performances from Robert Downy Jr and Jamie Foxx and a true story. I say story, but it's more of a slice of life deal. Very good portrayal of mental illness on screen though, very disorientating at times.

Oscar bait written all over it though, which can be a bit trying.

ipod mate, plus a 1 hour kip thats how I get through some of the really bad ones. (wife won't let me use the same strategy at school concerts)

  • In the Loop - promoted as the funniest British comedy in years. Which I guess might be the case if you think hearing someone say fluffybunny a lot is side splitting

Save yrself $15 and go to one of those insullt generating web sites as thats the one piece of humour in the movie - one of the characters rants well but talk about tiresome.

    3/10

Thanks dude, so brilliant in its simplicity ! will keep that in mind for a couple of years time !

I am normally a fan of Sandler, but alot of his movies follow that formula; very funny first half, weak through to the last 5 or 10.

  • (500) Days of Summer. A romantic comedy/drama about a guy who falls in love at first sight with a girl who doesn't believe in love. The film is presented in a non linear fashion, and hops around in random order through various events of their courtship. One of the better flick I have seen this year (along with The Hurt Locker).

  • Year One; Jack Black, Michael Cera

plus a host of other b list actors.

Had it's moments, but for the large part, pretty average 5.5/10

  • The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - shit.

  •
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - shit.
Well, due to a disagreement with the director.

  • Sean is a dead set legend and a guy I'd love to meet someday but it can't be denied he has been in some absolute shitters of movies.

I'd love to see this just to see how bad it is.....

  • Yeah but he was in Outland so he gets a free pass forever.

  • What the hell wast that movie.. xzxshok
