What are you listening to, right now................
-
I'll tell you what I'm not listening to at the moment; Miley Cyrus sings Smells like teen spirit. Kurt Cobain will be spinning in his grave
The first - and last - time I ever watched one of those glorified karaoke "Idol" shows, I saw a poof in a baby blue tuxedo singing the same song. Click

Mind you, I saw Nirvana a few times, and the last couple times when they elevated to arenas, Kurt wasn't singing that song any more, which pisssed-off a lot of fans, yet seemed like the deliberate last remaining vestige of punk rock he was digging his fingernails. -
A performance clip and track from a guy I know. Going to his CD release on Thursday at Te Papa (open and free entry if anyone is interested) http://www.tepapa.govt.nz/WhatsOn/allevents/Pages/MagnificentDyslexicCDRelease12MAY.aspx
It was thirty years ago today. Bob died. I cried. -
I picked up a copy of the Beastie Boys new album Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. Those guys still have it.

I saw their video on U (the new TVNZ teens channel) the other day, not bad.

This is the first single... a bit of an odd video.
Recently downloaded Gregg Allman's new album, "Low Country Blues" from iTunes. It is one of the best blues albums I've heard in a very long time. If there are any blues fans on here, I strongly encourage you to get this album. You won't be disappointed.

Summer approaches, so it's time for some smooth (but techy) house tracks.
Not house, but still appropriate. Nice chugging electro number - downtempo with a bit of a krautrock flavour:
I just watched this short arty film of Lindsay Lohan in a bathing suit, which is pretty much a short waste of time. What intrigued me most was the soundtrack. I thought at first it was surely My Bloody Valentine, but it's a band/artist named Tamaryn, who was born in New Zealand and now lives & works in San Francisco. -

I met the man in the early-mid 1990s, interviewed him, photographed him, watched him perform live afterward, he was supernice. But me, being in Canada, and him, having just come "clean" across the border from the States, he wanted to know if I could score him some rocks. I couldn't. There was an excellent long essay about him in The New Yorker magazine earlier this year which detailed his battle against crack. It was terribly sad, but gave the impression he was bouncing back.

Edit / update: Here's an obituary in The New Yorker by the same writer, with a link to the earlier feature:
A sweet circular logic here, the late-great master Alex Chilton covering Teenage Fanclub's "Alcoholiday." (Alex Chilton/Big Star being their heroes, and this is one of the great Alex Chilton songs that Alex Chilton never wrote.) Pretty much a faithful straight-ahead version of the original. Not sure of the source, sounds live, but excellent audio quality.

Stranger is the Fannies own radically different rockin' version of the same song, recorded for the Peel Sessions.

Fabulous. But sadly, the great first verse:
Listen ever get a feeling when you're taken by the hand
And led a course you can't command
Went to bed but I'm not ready
Baby I've been fucked already
The lyric has been changed to "used," probably for benefit of not offending the Beeb audience.

A surprising improvement on the original, however, the Peel Sessions version Blake changes that 2nd verse to an all-new:
Listen ever get the feeling that you've had too much to drink
Stretch your heart strings to the brink
I've been drunk but I'm not stupid
I don't want to play with cupid
Genius.

The timeless original, from Bandwagonesque, for anybody so inclined...
