Most Capped Test Team of All Time

  • I have been doing some googling and can't seem to find any collated figures around this one. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
If nothing is around I may work my way through some suggestions and create an article.
I am thinking that the AB 2015 RWC Final team must be close and also the England 2003 one. Nothing else springs to mind unless there was a slightly different version of either of these that ran out in another game.

  • I found some headlines saying that NZ named the most capped side in history for the opening match of the 2015 RWC
    link

So I presume the 2015 final would be the most ever

  • I'd have to back @Duluth as I vaguely recall the RWC final team being talked about in those terms

  • Ha! Thinking about it Joe Moody may have ruined that though. Wasn't he a late call up? Was Woody in that Argie game?

    He was

Looks like he didn’t play any knockout games. Maybe that Argie test is the record?

  • @duluth having said that, without doin any real research, and if were only talking the XV, there's 14 other starters who potentially had another 5 or 6 games each ... 6 x 14 = 84 ... may not make up for the loss of Woody?

  • I'm just surprised the numbers don't seem to be bouncing around easily on the interweb given all the other stats that are.

According to my numbers (and I haven't double checked that I have only counted tests and not all games) the Argentina game pips the final

Going into the Argie game the 23 players had 1336 caps between them.

The 3 player changes equalled -103 caps which was almost made up for by Booboos formula above. Even if the other 20 all had an extra 5 caps (and some didn't) that's a max of 100.

  • Either the Georgia or Tonga game would have been tops if it wasn't for McCaw and Nonu each sitting out of one.

The Tonga game comes closest as Ben Franks and Messam made up some of the caps lost from McCaw.

Final Pool game vs Tonga could be a shot. Similar side as Argentina but with 3 tests worth of caps in between.

Naholo for Savea drops it somewhat but the higher capped Kerr-Barlow, Franks and Messam replaced Peranara, Faumauina and Vito.

edit: saw Crucial beat me too it - but also that I missed McCaw out which makes a big difference.
