Pete Buttigeig's sexual preference parading his husband around might be all good with white liberals but it will NOT play well with church going African Americans in the Southern and swing states. Funnily, Politico won't mention this as the obvious reason for his lack of black support + no name recognition. He knows this is his Achilles-heel.
https://www.politico.com/news/2019/12/03/buttigieg-black-outreach-2020-074867Rather odd comment given the huge amount written about how and why this isn't actually the key reason Mayor Pete polls so badly with blacks.Plenty of church going whites that are homophobic and that isn't hurting him as much.
His record regarding blacks while mayor is far more hurtful alongside his massive unintended gaffe saying 'all lives matter' in a 'black lives matter' discussion.
He has basically shot himself in the foot so badly that the best he can hope for is an increased profile followed by a years long concerted effort to turn around his reputation.
I's also add women to his list of achilles heels -

As for church going whites.. I doubt they are a significant percentage of the democrat primary populace. Generally murdering babies doesnt sit well with church goers of any skin colour. And the Democrats are definately a party supporting abortion.

I think party split is pretty well on par with the overall split for all christian groups part from Evangelicals and Mormons.
EDIT: I found a survey that backs this up although the big proviso is that Republicans 'care' much more about their religious beliefs and get their 'right and wrong' beliefs more strongly from religion.

I think the candidates and their problems are a reflection of the deeper problem. The Dem voters and thus party are deeply divided.
Some of their policies are very unpopular within swing states (Medicare for All costs, perceived softness on illegal immigration, higher taxes)
They are trying to unite the factions under the "orange man bad" banner.

I think it's more that they can't work out whether to fight extremes with extremes or plead to common sensibilities.
The 'middle ground' doesn't sway that much so targeting them is a bit of a lost cause and there will be a % of Republicans in that zone that simply won't vote anyway.
The Dems run the same risk (alienating the middle) if the candidate is too extreme and alienating the extremes if they don't appear to be trying to fight fire with fire.Personalities aside it will simply come down to whether enough people feel 'affected' enough to kick out the current bunch and replace them for the sake of it.
None of the Dem candidates comes across as a leader to do something positive to peoples lives. The best they can aim at is healthcare (and possibly fixing the tax tables so people don't get stung with end of year bills). Massive public works (jobs)investment is about the only tool left in the cupboard

Which is why I said church going. Pelosi and Mayor Pete (and Trump ) claim I be christians... But I bet they hardly ever go to to church without inviting the media to film their piety.

@Crucial
No. I think they are truly divided.And there is a longer term power struggle for the ideology of the Dems beyond this election. My money is on the socialists.
What is considered "extreme" by moderate Dems, is honestly believed by the Sanders-Warren wing of the party. It is not considered extreme at all.

@Crucial Except there is nothing extreme about Trumps presidency, his personality is extreme. But his policies are very mainstream.

What I'm saying is that many people may view his policies as extreme given their own political slant.

I really should get back off this board. I stopped reading it for ages as it was full of posters getting dragged into personality arguments and irrelevant finger pointing about their own views.
Any attempt to make comment about political 'happenings' moves quickly to questions like this.

@Crucial
If you would rather not discuss the policies you don't like of Trump's (or don't actually have an answer because you secretly love them ) that's fine.I openly say my own views here. It isn't a sensitive matter to me.
I am just trying to understand the thinking of people who might have views different from my own. -

I am just trying to understand the thinking of people who might have views different from my own.I'm going to call bullshit on that @Frank
You post on here to cheerlead and support your opinion (which you are entitled to do). I have never once seen you genuinely 'try to understand differing views' even through debate.
Even recently you attacked a comment of mine, where I said I disliked Trump due to his personality more so than policy by equating me with people stupid enough to criticise policy without knowing it. Again, just now you tried to drag me into the same argument.
You don't appear to have any desire to debate or 'understand' just a desire to prove your view as the correct one. -
@Crucial
Ha ha - partially true. Fair comment.But right now I am trying to know what policies you dislike of Trump and you are really, really determined not to say. I am trying to understand you and you don't want to say.
I guess I should get back to what I do best - cheerleading for Trump.

OK, I will give you one example. The only example that affects me directly and one that I feel I have a 'right' to whinge about.
His Border Protection policies emboldening a bunch of tossers that were already tossers to begin with and giving them unbridled powers to be even bigger tossers.
I like living in a 'free' society that values an assumption that you are going about your life in a legal manner unless there is good reason to think otherwise . Not an assumption that just because you want to enter a country you are a bad egg and must prove otherwise. The ability to demand electronic devices and passwords just because you want to transit through the US is an example. The ability to detain without representation or good reason is another. The ability to detain someone based simply on their religion is another.
Now these policies didn't start with Trump but he has solidified them and encouraged their execution to the extreme.How does this affect me? It certainly deters me from wanting to run the gauntlet to visit friends in the US and even more so the stupidity of paying for an ESTA to change planes then joining endless queues to get processed. (This is also one of the reasons the AirNZ flights to London have become less desirable and then cancelled)
There you go, an example. Not sure how that helps you.
