Australian Federal Election
-

Labor introduced the following:

Mandatory detention,

Manus Island and Nauru detention centres, and

the PNG solution.

They also dismantled the Coalition's border protection regime claiming that would save $60 million. It cost more than $10 billion and over 1000 lives. All of it needlessly given Howard's Pacific Solution had removed the problem.
-

That's not the point.

The point is in the early days of Rudd, they fucked it up totally. That's the history the Liberals are basing this campaign on, and that makes it a valid shot to take.

On the other hand, the Liberals have never privatised Medicare, or even suggested it. So it's pretty baseless to suggest this is an imminent possibility with a Turnbull Government, but Shorten is just hoping the electorate is dumb enough to believe it.
-

Fuck me you are the single biggest tool going RS. Your right wing - white male apologist crap is so seriously fucked up.

Please point out exactly where you think my post is deranged???

Just because someone expresses an idea or belief system contrary to your own which is backed up with some actual facts you attack the person. And then when it gets turned around on you, more often than not you back up quickly and pull that... "Who me, what did I do?" attitude

Please by all means look up boat arrivals under Labour and see for yourself just how they were diminishing in the 6 months in the lead up to the last election... Please by all means look up who established Manus and Naru.

You might be shocked that the actual real world does not simply conform to your narrow right wing view of the world... but by all means please continue to live in that burrow, under that rock found in that cave.

You might be shocked to realize that there are a shit load of people who live in Australia who absolutely detest the "concentration camps" that are Naru and Manus. There are people out there who believe the tactics used by this Government in dealing with legitimate refugees are simply appalling!

And whilst Abbott, Morrison, Payne, Dutton, Bernardi, Christensen, etc may be your heroes but they sure as fuck are not everyone's cup of tea!

But hey, continue to spray your ad hominem attacks while defending your heroes.

I take back my original post. Deranged doesn't do you justice.
-

Yes, I absolutely do not disagree that Rudd's decisions resulted in loads of boats heading our way.

Yet you miss the point that by the end of Gillard's tenure and during Rudds bit part at the end, the boats were actually well on the decrease and as antipoden has also stated, it was Labours fault we have Manus, Nauru, etc.

There also seems to be a convenient misreading of my first point which raised to highlight that the rhetoric is as bad on both sides... and in particular I highlighted the "war on business" crap from the Libs in response to the "privatisation of medicare" from Labour.

I personally cannot stand all of this made up bullshit and rhetoric from both sides... Bill Shorten will clearly maintain the current Libs policy and practices that will stop the boats and for any government to declare a war on business would be suicide... also I do not believe in any way that Libs will privatise medicare. However they clearly want to outsource the processing of Medicare claims/payments and I have absolutely no problem with that.

In terms of handling refugees including those arriving by boat is something that both sides of politics need to work on to come up with a more humane and moral way forward rather than those currently employed by this Mob and what the other Mob wants to continue to perpetuate.

But hey, this far too long election has made it verys clear that the level of politics is hitting new lows far too often for anyone's liking.
-

You mean the American hip hop group?

Lets get ridiculous!

We're actually talking about the least important election this year.

So I think we already are.
-

No, offshore detention is still a thing - in fact some are talking about NZ as a possible solution. Which is a shame because the bits I've seen are quite nice. Anyway, sure there's money involved.

So I just got the obligatory recorded message autodialer from Robotic Malcolm Turnbull, thanking me for my patience in a long campaign.

No apology for fucking calling an 8-week campaign, though I didn't listen past the first 8 words.
-

Out early this morning to knock it on the head - stood in the freezing cold while they fart-arsed around getting the polling station ready. Pencil work, B&E Roll, democracy DONE for ... well for the next 6 months maybe. Baird isn't due to call an election until 2019 (and why the fuck would he) and given Mal will probably get up, I hope we'll see a period of stability from the Feds.

Voting in winter is nice actually, but I think next time I'll plan a camping trip and absentee it.
-

NSW actually has fixed four year terms, Nick, so Baird can't call an election if he tried.

Actually think it should be the same for the Feds. Means a Government can implement risky/unpopular reforms, because they have enough time to sell them to the electorate and have people see the results over the longer term. That's why the NSW Government can do something like Council mergers, because people may shout and scream now, but by 2019 they will have forgotten the whole thing and realised that the whole world hasn't collapsed and their bins still get emptied on time.

In the current Fed system, the Government spends the first year trying to consolidate their election win, and the third year preparing for an election. Which leaves only the second year to actually get anything done, with not enough time to really commit to anything in the longer term.
-
Well that was farking painful. Those senate ballots are absolutely ridiculous. Was on my way to vote informal when a little motorcade pulling massive "Saving Medicare" signs drove by. That tipped me over the edge. As mentioned earlier in the thread I had a horrendous lot to vote from. A local indi business owner would have easily had my vote. Unless it was a real estate agent.

Didn't help my mood that bloody Pauline Hanson was at the booth. Ginga bitch. I want my old electorate back. -

Yep , she's quite the milf.

When I lived in Sydney my flat mate used to bang on about how hot Pauline Hanson was . I put that down to the volume of hydro he smoked, there's no other plausible explanation . -

That makes me sick. Saw her in the flesh today and I'm just glad I hadn't gone the sausage sizzle. I probably would have chucked up on the very nice old Greens fellow collecting the used how to vote cards. -
Christopher Paaaaeeeeyyyyn in trouble. How sad.
