@nonpartizan A meat pie. There are plenty of varieties from standard mince and cheese to gourmet flavours.

Thank you. What is the going rate?

From NZ$5-$20 depending on where you buy it, and the ingredients. Here is an article for a quick summary (missing some options for me) but it gives you an idea. The US women's rugby team ate plenty of them while in NZ for the RWC.

The Cape is a long way, a day trip by bus from Paihia

Get up and drive there for sunrise, much quicker and great views - bloody cold on the walk down though and you're possibly going to get to experience being in the middle of a cattle drive.

Have you driven to the cape from Paihia in a day? How long did it take? Do you have to drive on the beach? Is it an easy drive?

Nah started out in Kaitaia, up to the cape in time for sunrise and then a dawdle back to Paihia... it's only an extra 90 minutes or so for the proposed journey. And yeah had a little 5 minute blat on 90 mile on the way down, but why would you ask if you have to?

Was in Paihia by lunchtime, but that was summer.

Make sure you stop for a v, pie and coffee at Pukenui Pacific on the way up/down.

Ok. Thanks. I'm just trying to come up with a ballpark figure that I will need. I will plan on bringing double that then.

Pies, fish and chips, the usual burgers and takeout aren't too expensive. And there are plenty of cheapish eats in the big cities if you look for them. Both Auckland and Wellington have lots of cheap Asian food, and snack foods and fruit at supermarkets to supplement your paid meals

So do-able 90 mile beach is a state highway but I wouldn't recommend it unless you are used to it. Not sure of the rental companies policies either.

Wasn't allowed in the '90s, actually in the rental contract. Doesn't mean you can't do it of course, just that you aren't insured. I doubt that has changed.

    I won't explain how I know this.

Early 90s we found a car company that allowed this (driving on a beach) but they changed it soon after. Have been driven to Cape Reinga from Auckland CBD and back in a day by a neighbour but his old convertible has a giant engine and his foot was heavier than lead. What a great day it was.

I also agree on Paihia as way too touristy.

One option would be to spend two nights in Mangonui, then

That's what I did. It's an easy drive from there and no need to get up stupidly early.

Did drive on the beach in a rental though ... 🙂

The only issue we had was getting a little stuck in the sand at the very beginning.

Also gives them the chance to have some Aussie style fish and chips without going to Oz at the Mangonui Fish and Chips shop. I'm going to retreat to my foxhole now.

Who the fudge is buying $20 pies in NZ? I can understand paying that in Oz so you can actually get a decent amount of meat, but in NZ?

@Nepia That seems to be the upper end price for gourmet pies. And no, I've never paid that much for one!

Is this New Zealand's most expensive pie?

Is this New Zealand's most expensive pie?

A gourmet crayfish pie, created by PJ's Pies in Hanmer Springs, would set you back $50. Owner Jim Bratschi explains.

    and no I wouldn't.

I just realized this trip will be my son's first beer in a pub/bar since the age limit here is 21. Landmark moment!

What is the best beer to celebrate the occasion?

So many choices, depends on what you want. There are lots of craft beers in NZ that are very good, Garage Project, Panhead are a couple I like. There's always basic mainstream beers like Heinekin, Steinlager, Asahi, Corona if you want

Panhead Supercharger is a safe bet.

Crafty enough to be better than anything else mainstream but mainstream enough to be not too Crafty. Win/win.
