Here in the Waikato, no change in format for the two main senior grades. Division 2 is dead and gone. It sounds like the Presidents grade is growing with the SA Buffalos affiliating with my club Te Rapa and chat that Fraser Tech are trying to get a team. Under 85kg is down to four teams with a cross border competition with Counties helping to add a few more games in the season.

In Te Rapa's grade, Division 1, Frankton rate themselves with a new coaching team and some Melville 85's coming across. Suburbs have Cortez Ratima's dad. Numbers are building nicely at Te Rapa with not too much exodus.

@ploughboy I did see that Josh Coffin has left Oto, and Sean Ralph (Waikato squad hooker) has left TA Sports to join his brother.

The Harbour Hawks in Dunedin have announced several signings on Instagram. Players from all over the country and overseas. Can't imagine they will be cheap....

Looking like 15 teams in the Presidents grade in the Waikato. We have relaxed the age limit down to 30. Some are out of the lapsed Div 2 grade.

There are 9 teams in the Premiership comp in Northland (Wellsford through to Kerikeri) with Waipu removing themselves from the Premiership competition, so we end up with a bye week. Potentially strengthens some sides as many of their better players look to have moved to other Prem sides.

its interesting, ive been doing some recruitment for my club, there are social media groups where players and clubs can find each other...and there are a lot of people out there looking for gigs, even unpaid, we have guy thats played semi pro in france joining us, another that has a handfull of game for wasps and leister joining, at most we'll pick up their registration unofficially

Dunedin might be a less attractive destination than melbourne...but there is a talent pathway of people do thing they could play up a level

more specifically re their announcements...that font is unreadable...i cant tell you any of their names from the pictures

I didn't realise there was an age limit. What was it previously?

@antipodean Usually 35. Under 30's can play but can't score and need to play to the spirit of the grade. Some of the former Div 2 teams last year didn't always follow the spirit.

    Top tier players they recruited.

    A guy with super experience

    Two Canterbury B players

A former Wellington club player of the year.

Plus some decent young players like Luca Fuller who will be apart of the Dunedin based Southland Acadamey.

The owner of Chipmunks used to dund Harbour a few years ago. Not sure who is funding it now.

Say some of these guys will be heading to Dunedin with the expectation of making Otago. Apart from Fuller.

And yeah the font is rubbish.

Te Rapa is hosting Waihi, it will be tough. Playing at Willoughby park by the Stadium, grass a bit softer there.

Ardmore Marist make promising start to season - Counties Sports Hub

Ardmore Marist triumphed 43-10 over the Manukau Rovers from Auckland in their first pre-season match of the season. It was an encouraging result for the Counties Manukau side after a win-less campaign in the McNamara Cup. McNamara Cup runners-up Karaka scored a convincing 79-19 win over Waikato...

Round 1 of the Whangarei Premiership got underway last week (I was away, so unable to get out and watch)

No surprises in any of the results in the 1st weekend, with Waipu pulling out of the premiership we now have an uneven number, so Hora Hora had the bye in week 1.

Couple of preview pieces in the ODT. Firstly from known Club Rugby nut Paul Dwyer. One point he makes is about rumblings of the Otago Board not wanting Southland contracted players to play in the Dunedin comp. I'd be disappointed if they take a hard line on this. However, it does ned to br controlled a bit. I reckon there may be 15 to 20 Southland aligned players in the comp. A way around it could be having a Southland barbarians team based out of Dunddin. Which would also even up the number of teams. I'm all about having the Southland lads in Dunedin, as it is best for the Landers long term. Just need to ensure we have enough space for the Otago affiliated players.

Long wait over and it’s all go now

Long wait over and it’s all go now

So club rugby is back again in Otago. It’s been a long wait, it seems, since last year. Well, that’s not quite true, down on the farm in Central,...

Then the full ODT preview. The team to look out for is Harbour. Looks like they have recruited a full squad.

    Dunedin arguably shape as favourites

Club rugby gets under way on Saturday - and Dunedin are looking good.
