Not a good sign; I hope that doesn't mean he's going to sign for Taranaki (his home province), going back to Otago, or signs with another team. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if we lose a few more ...

Good to see Renton back on the bench.

I have no high expectations for this game, but I really, really, hope we can win this, because otherwise I won't hear the end of it from my BOP mates. They're desparate for those Bay bragging rights.

@Stargazer Surprisingly there's more on the game for us than expected - a bonus point win and we're undeservedly in the semis. That's something for you to look forward to next season - you can lose most of your games and still have a chance of the semis in the final week.

And yes, about time we got the title back from you - it's been a while since you've come here for a game and we don't travel too well ....

Thank god the season from hell is over. The only bright spot really was Lowe. And Cridge was ok once we finally got to see a run of games from him.

One hell of a quick slide into the depths of the Championship by HB. Any particular reason you reckon?
Surely it can't have been one thing. A combo of coaching and low ebb talent wise?

Bad coaching and bad planning. We had some holes to fill and didn't fill them.

But they really looked uncoached much of the time.

I reckon it's going to be one of those falls that will take a couple of years to recover from TBH. We'll likely struggle in 2nd Div next year - hopefully this year hasn't killed off Super aspirations of some of our players.

Players we lost because of injury or because they've left:

    • Prop: Edmonds unavailable due to injury - his replacement, May, obviously not of the same level

    • Lock: Retallick with ABs/ Allardice unavailable due to season ending injury / Waqa unavailable due to season ending injury - one replacement: a geriatric, Filipo, who has also been injured several times, resulting in a development player playing a few games off the bench. We basically only had Abbott and Cridge

    • Loosies: O'Connor, Stanley gone/ Evans unavailable due to season ending injury / Renton also injured for most of the season, resulting in an average club rugby player regularly playing off the bench. Not sure why they haven't used Mikaele-Tu'u more when he was not on U19 duties. Selesele, a Samoan 7s player & captain, was far from the worst on defence but totally uninspiring

    • Halfback: they still select Eaton; need I say more? Wilson disappeared with the development team, unsure why

    • 1st five: Elkington-MacDonald gone; instead we've a talented 19 year old (Falcon), but wait, they played him at 12 all season, because they haven't replaced Horrell. West must have played an insane number of minutes this season after playing most games in SR ...

    • Midfield: Horrelll & Buckman gone and not replaced. We had Marshall, who played a few games and got injured for the season, Fruean (injured most of the time as well, but good when he played), Ropiha and Lowe, who was IMO the best player of the team all season! Fuck SR if he doesn't get a spot in a SR franchise.

    • Outside backs: Dagg with ABs/ Guildford gone/ his replacement, McNicoll unavailable for the season due to a concussion suffered in the last Chiefs' game and not replaced himself. We had Emerson (not too bad, but not exceptional), Garland was a positive surprise, Tongia disappointed a bit and suddenly left for France two weeks ago, Chase injured most of the season.

    Did I miss someone/something?

In my opinion, many of our players are good players. There was nothing wrong with our tackling last year or during SR. So to me, it seems there's been something wrong with the coaching or in the organisation. The team had no confidence from the start (they lost all preseason games), the game plan seemed to be lacking regularly, and esp recruitment was extremely poor. No leader and communicator in the backs. I also think we even missed O'Connor in the forwards (never thought I'd say that), and geez, did we miss Edmonds!

I don't know if any of you guys noticed, but my better half looked at photos of the games and she noticed how the players often looked "like ghosts", tense, nervous, tired etc when they ran onto the field. No fighting spirit to be seen, no determination, no energy.

Fuck what an aweful season. Agree with @Nepia about the season from hell being over. Unfortunately, these coaches' contracts run until the end of 2017. I doubt they'll get sacked. The Union will probably blame the players or anybody else other then themselves ... It will take a while until we're back in the Premiership.

Maybe Jonah Lowe has an outside chance for a Maori AB spot later in the year?

I hope so. I really think he deserves it and there aren't that many Maori midfielders that are deserving of a spot (or more deserving of a spot). Advantage is also that he can play midfield and both wings. Would be awesome, considering Karl has also played for the team.
