Hurricanes 2017

Who are in, who are out? The Canes have announced a few signings, but there are still several uncertainties because the length of a player's contract is often not published. I can't see many of them leaving the Canes, particularly not Perenara to name one player, but there have been a few unexpected movements in Super Rugby the last few months, so who really knows?
Starting point for the list below is the 2016 squad as published in October 2015.

Looking to move to the champion highlanders when Smith is forced out of the country and if that doesn't happen he'll be able to move to the Crusaders after their dismal halfback showing in 2017.

Very happy to have kept Loni Uhila (Waikato) and Ricky Riccitelli (Hawke's Bay). They were both superb at the end
How did Geoffrey Cridge (Hawke's Bay) get on this year.
re Wes Goosen (Wellington). Good to see him listed in the midfield. He needs to bulk up but for me he is a definite option at 2nd 5. Jodie needs to bulk up but the starting team sort of picks itself (Thompson replacing Vito, NMS at FB) except for 2nd 5. There are 4-5 possible options. J Barrett, Goosen, Laumape, Aso or maybe even Peter Umaga-Jensen. Aso was only OK last year but is still young. Jodie and PUJ will likely be protected to begin. Laumape seems a bit limited. Goosen with some bulk could be every good. But I haven't seen enough of him at 2nd 5 yet
How did Geoffrey Cridge (Hawke's Bay)

@Winger Cridge finally had a lot of game time for the Magpies this season (he started every game and played 724 minutes in 10 games), so we could have a good look at him. I did not really know what to expect because he had hardly played for Hawke's Bay (and the Canes) before due to injury, but he surprised and was actually quite good. He was good in the line-out, quick for a 2.00m lock and scored 2 tries and made 1 try assist.
He took out 3 of the Hawke's Bay awards: MVP, best forward & players' player.
I hope he'll get enough game time for the Canes in 2017, so we can actually see whether he can perform well at SR level, too. I'm quite optimistic, he's only 21, but he needs time on the paddock.

Canes fans should be well happy.
On paper they look to have the best balance of strong players among the NZ squads. Of course injuries, luck etc etc can come into it plus a team of 'lesser' names can also get on a good roll, but betting wise you wouldn't go past them topping the conference -
The Hurricanes v Brumbies game on Fri 21 April will be played at McLean Park, Napier. Great news!
Last year, the Canes offered Napier the game v Western Force, which was rejected by Napier City Council, so the game was played in Palmerston North in front of a small crowd. Glad they didn't do the same this year by offering a game v Stormers or Cheetahs (for example), but instead have chosen a game against a better opponent (although one of the NZ franchises would obviously have been preferable). Super Rugby games in Napier are usually very well attended. Although the circumstances were sad (just after Jerry Collins and his partner passed away), the game v Highlanders in 2015 was awesome.

Magpies Tiaan Falcon and Jonah Lowe brought into Hurricanes squad as injury cover players!
For Falcon, 19, this was one of two significant selections in recent days. Along with his Clive clubmate and fellow Magpie, outside back Jonah Lowe, who played for this year's Baby Blacks, Falcon has been selected as injury cover players for the Hurricanes. Lowe, 20, will link up with the Canes from December 1 and Falcon after the Palmy camp. Falcon's father and former Maori All Black and Magpies loosie Gordon Falcon played four games for the Canes in 2000 while Lowe's older brother and former Maori All Black and Magpies flanker Karl Lowe played 41 matches for the Canes from 2009-2013.http://www.nzherald.co.nz/hawkes-bay-today/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503462&objectid=11753050

@Bones You mean Tiaan's dad Gordon? Yeah, only 4 for the Canes. I also thought he played more. 11 for the Brumbies; 74 for the Magpies. A few games for NZ Maori. And league (22 games for Penrith Panthers). Granddad Ray Falcon also played for NZ Maori and the Magpies (40 games). Some pedigree there!
