@Rapido Just listened to the latest episode and I have to disagree. They (the two British guys) were talking up the Lions set piece and basing it solely on their performance against the Crusaders. Sounds like they know very little about NZ rugby and you could tell that the kiwi guy hosting it was getting really frustrated with the constant ridiculing of NZ's lineout, breakdown and scrumaging abilities. If they think the Crusaders poor lineout means the Abs are going to be equally as poor, then they are in for a shock.

Yeah. I actually agree with this. Thought Jin Hamilton was seeing what he wanted too see. Was going to comment about it somewhere but couldn't be arsed on my phone.
But at least they were talking about rugby.

Flats and Shanks also often a good listen. Ex England international David Flatman and Welsh International Tom Shanklin. Not too much Lions content yet, but they do have a good interview with Phil Bennett talking about the 74 and 77 tours.

That was a really good long interview (50 min) - a real insight from a sporting and human perspective. Bennett talked about what it was like for a 70s amateur player to have to get time off work for a long tour and the impact of being away from wife and young child.
Also some jaw-dropping penny-pinching compared to today's corporate-logo'd lavish NH/SH tours:
There was only match-day kit - they had to bring their own club training kit (and dry it out each night!)Sadly the rest of the podcasts waffle far too much - which is a shame as Flatman is good when he is in the TV-commentary box and chips in with a couple of pertinent comments about scrums. But clearly, when given an open microphone and no time limit, the focus can wander.

See the post above, they definitely digress a touch too much, but I still prefer it to Eggchasers, which seems to be the market leader in the UK and the Rugby Pod (Goode's a bit of a prick)
Thought the interview and insight with Bennett was great. Was a different world back then and the pressures touring for 3-4 months with the Lions put on your family life and day job were huge. The section where he talks about coming back from victorious SA tour in 74 after being away for much of his wife's pregnancy and subsequently losing the baby was tough going.

Great thread. A lot of these podcasts have been fascinating listens.
Perhaps we could have this as a general rugby podcast thread. There are some good Aussie rugby podcasts and i'm sure South African etc.
Listened to the podcast on the 05 Lions Tour.
What stood out for me was:

A lack of ownership of the problems. Even in just the people they interviewed there was a lot of ego. A lot of blame being dished out but not a lot of ownership - even 12 years later.

Woodward was interestingly vague/blase. Woodward did not go into much detail at all. He did touch on preferring Englishman as they had beaten ABs in nz in 2003 whereas the other nations players had a fear of playing the ABs. He seemed to suggest the tour was impossible which I found a bit of a cop out. I would have liked him to deep dive into his mistakes and what he would have done differently but I guess that tells you the makeup of Sir Clive.

Victim mentality - with SpearGate those interviewed didnt even entertain the flipside of the entire incident - and then with ABs (and southern hemisphere teams in general) getting special treatment at the judiciary 'for years' whatever the hell that means. Again an example of blame vs ownership. Also an example of Matt Dawson who was interviewed being a complete twat.

Touring. How different touring was even in 05 to now. The way the Lions were in individual rooms was lunacy. Wifi/social media I imagine would make this 17 tour much different to 05.

Really? Adults in their own room is lunacy? I'm sure team unity and culture wouldn't take a big hit if players had their own room.

@Nepia On a 6 week tour with players from 4 nations i'd think it would have a huge impact on team culture and team building.
I don't think that, if a team can't bond without players sharing a room then they've clearly got other issues.
