What are you listening to, right now................

It was kinda bewitching & hypnotic. I've been familiar with most of the material for a very long time, so it was interesting to hear in a new context. For some reason it really jumped out at me how blues-influenced much of David Gilmour's lead playing is, which isn't always apparent in their original versions. I did hear a few mistakes, which made me think this was a live mix using vinyl and perhaps some tape looping (using Several Species to punctuate the rhythm occasionally, which I really liked), and it did make me think how that sort of mix nowadays would all be mixed to perfection in a computer, so it did give me a few ideas, as I have in the past done quite a bit of audio looping for soundtracks where I needed to cannibalize music on the cheap.

Has anyone listened to the new Soundgarden record yet? As a white bloke in my mid-30s, i am obviously a massive Soundgarden fan, so do i bother? or is it tarnishing their great memory?

No, idea, but I did have some friends go see them last month. They said Cornell still has the pipes, but being middle-aged isn't quite the wildman on stage he once was. To be expected. Their bigger disappointment was that in a 24-song set, they didn't play "Jesus Christ Pose." I was never a big fan, but I saw them play 4 times (free tickets) during the Badmotorfinger era and went every time specifically to see them play that song, IMO it was one of the most epic & monumental songs performed live of that era. (Reminds me, I was backstage for one of the shows in '91 and Cornell had an exquisite woman on his arm, totally exotic model type oozing class, one of the most beautiful women I'd ever seen in my life (as I heard Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Goin' Out With Him?" playing in my head). Made me think, gee whizz, I wanna be a greasy rock n' roll star! I wonder if she still looks as good? Betting not.) -
Now I know this is a generally trendy music thread, so my mentioning of pop may send some derision my way. I haven't instantly liked a song in years, I'm always a couple of listens at least before I really like music but the latest Bruno Mars song had me hooked on first listen and I think it's the best new song I've heard in a long time.
Having not really listened to Bruno Mars I went out and listened to a few of his other tracks - unfortunately they are all stock standard and rather boring R&B ballads.

I also didn't get the Police comparison instantly either but everyone I speak to seems to think it sounds like a Police song. Seems a little bit too upbeat to sound completely Police to me! -

Trendy? In the last page there are posts about Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and Yes. This is the kitchen sink! -

Thanks for the response dude, enjoyed reading that. I think the mix was made live on a radio show.
Am enjoying this "soft prog" mix at the moment. Great track from Gentle Giant to open up:
This "soft prog" mix is pretty nice. Gentle Giant and the Soft Machine kick it off:
Check that BBC "Prog Rock" doc on the previous page if you haven't done so. They sadly (mostly) pass over GG, but they do highlight Soft Machine. I am a big fan of their first three albums. Many, many years ago there were rumours that Jimi Hendrix recorded with them, but if it was ever released, I never heard it, but always fantasized about how good that could have been. I've seen tour posters to universities in the U.K with Hendrix, Floyd, Who and Soft Machine on the same bill, I suspect each act probably only had a 20-minute set each, but I would have loved to have seen one of those shows. (The doc also profiles a band called Egg, of whom I am completely ignorant.) -

I just watched Head for the first time in many years. It really is one of the trippiest, most surreal movies I've ever seen. (Legend has it that Jack Nicholson wrote the script in a single night on LSD.) Great songs! -
at this time every year, seeing as i never spend christmas with my family, i start listening to a lot of Bowie, as it's what i would be listening to at home. My oldies love this bloke, and so do i. What a legend.
My favourite Bowie track, this video is obviously a Top of the Pops type thing. His characters are all awesome
I've listened to it quite a bit. I like it. They've kept their old sound mostly so it still works.
Ahhh... so good.

But I heard the album version of this the other day and it just sounded wrong. I can't listen to Bowie no more unless it's a version from Bowie at the Beeb.
Just been listening to the 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition of Marvin Gaye's Trouble Man soundtrack.
[/quote]

It took me years of tracking down that movie, but i finally got it earlier this year. The soundtrack is much better. I don't have the Expanded Edition of the album... yet.
