I've been thinking about what the Highlanders will do post Sopoaga, and I think their best short term option is to hunt a decent 10 from overseas. I just don't see anyone in NZ at the moment, ready strategically to step into a starting role. Josh Ioane has a similar game to Lima, but I feel he's some way off yet. Time for the management team to dust off the cheque book, and to sign someone with a bit of experience.

@southernmann Isn't Marty Banks only on a one year contract at Trevisio?

Otherwise your best bet might be Gatland.

Starting to understand why the Blues have struggled eh?

I hear that Cipriani will be looking for a new gig 🙂

Experience is overrated. That is how you end up with Chris Noakes as your 10.

By 2019 Josh Ioane and Fletcher Smith would have had another year in the setup.

I agree Mitchell Hunt would be a very likely and very good target though - Highlanders and Ta$man have a very close relationship - isnt Mitchell Drummond's old man ( Ta$man family) on the board of the Highlanders?

@kiwimurph yep, it's not as if Sopoaga was Mr Experience when he took the reigns. Ioane, step on up!

@bones .............Gatland has the best all-round game and should be #1 candidate.

Sure Sopoaga was only 19 when he first arrived, but from memory he had two years playing alongside Colin Slade. While his two deputies in 2018 will have a similar experience, they don't quite possess the same level of skill that Sops does. I would be interested in Mitchell Hunt, but apart from him I can't see anyone in NZ that I would happily see running the cutter. The young Blues first five would be worth stealing, but if that's not a guaranteed win.

Gatland is only on a one year deal so would like be available for the Highlanders in 2019 with Black/Perofeta/presumably Plummer at the Blues. I'm not sure about the all-round game of Gatland though - he has next to no running game from what i've seen.

As much as I love the Canes winning, I would be pissed off if they started signing "experienced" overseas players to the detriment of NZ rugby in an effort to be the strongest club. Screw that, we should be using Super rugby to test our local talent to see if they have what it takes to make the step up for test level.

Yip, that's the one I would like to see down here. Who ever ends up in that jersey in 2019 needs to be a strong runner and passer. A traditional first five wouldn't work trying to play running rugby, like how the Highlanders want to play.

Not quite super rugby, but I couldn’t be bothered starting a new thread.

    Stuff

George Smith in the gun. A friend of a friend (rugby player) was arrested a few years ago and (seriously) it led to the resignation of the coach. Pretty serious about their discipline over here so I’m watching this one with interest...

Jeez that early 00s Brumbies team has it in for cabbies aye.

I'm passionate about my highlanders and Sopoaga leaving is a BIG problem. Main reason is that at 26 he has some time left, bfa and Aaron will be gone after WC which leaves us vunerable, Lima would have helped being there.
For me there are good you 10s out there. Josh Ioane Cld be the answer I think long term, Fletcher (having watched since schools) has reached his potential I think. For me I elf go after Blues 10s, either 1. Perofeta (a better Lima imo) or Plummer. I would imagine they'll keep one with Otere around and the other will leave.
Also keep an eye of Tiaan Falcon and how he goes st super level, he looks good but is stuck behind Mackenzie.
    That's our options imo

Heard a rumour that the highlanders have been speaking to Damien Mackenzie about signing for 2019. How long is he contracted to the chiefs for?

@sammyc Apparently until the end of this season:

The Super Rugby sensation turned down offers from other Kiwi franchises, understood to be the Blues and Crusaders, in favour of signing on in Hamilton for a further two years, till the end of the 2018 campaign.

As a Magpies fan the Highlanders always tend to be the second supported team.

Oh crap, are you suggesting that Cooper is going to go all Hammettuer on us?
