No, but I have toyed with the idea of becoming a personal trainer, using my own chunky history as a basis for inspiration <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Yep - when I was playing I never understood why I couldn't run as fast as other blokes and never seemed to get better. It comes down to two things at a basic level that I was doing wrong. The corrections are:

• drive your opposite knee forward as soon as the other foot hits the ground - like you're kneeing some bloke who just groped your missus <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

• this puts you in a position, once you extend your foot out, to land on your forefoot (ball and toe) and then use your hammy and glute to pull you forward. All the muscles in the back of your leg take the impact like a spring, as it should be. NOT YOUR KNEE! Which is what shoe manufacturers try to sell their product on - bad running technique.

I'll bet when you look at your running style, you rarely bring your legs right out in front of you. Very common to chunky blokes because our philosophy is to push things with our legs - especially front rowers because it's how we roll <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Watch that video " running with Eric" that I linked. Start small - understand how his advice works with your sprinting over short distances, then apply it to longer distances at slightly lower pace. You'll feel it in your calves I'm here to tell you, but you will definitely notice the difference in your distance running.

It will make you understand how wingers can run so fast - stretching out those skinny little legs to grip the earth with their poncy "blades" instead of rearranging it with studs like men.

They have found foot prints fossilised in the Australian outback that have an estimated running speed equal to Usain Bolt at his top speed - as a race we used to be a lot more physically capable, even without shoes. Fore foot striking, of course
Yeah dude, running from Mammoths would give me a hundred metre time close to his I reckon.

Must have been the wearing of shackles for several generations that later slowed your lot down.

You know there's quite a few backs in rugby who weigh more than that, I don't know how you're gonna live with yourself. I'm gonna start calling you Bart the 2nd.

I have had similar "issues" in the past mate especially playing tighthead when you're under the cosh at scrum time it can be really difficult to walk quickly let alone run around the track.

I've also had difficulty increasing my running speed when the mind is willing but legs feel like lead.

I don't have that problem on the treadmill. I just crank up the speed and run faster or fall off.
Fuck yea, when i first got shotgun marched into the 2nd row, after every scrum my legs were fucked, and it's worse from lock because you are expected to haul ass out wide. I reckon it took me a full year to get the right kind of fitness into my legs.
