^^^ this is good advice.

I did similar (but not for paleo) and deprived myself of all sauces etc and what I deemed as treats. I then started using a few low calorie sauces and making stuff like low carb protein pancakes and they all tasted awesome to me. Wife (who just eats what she wants and cranks abs year round) tried some of it and thought it was horrible and nothing like the real thing.

Sounds good!

Personally, I think the key for going Paleo is to totally deprive yourself of anything but the most basic paleo meals for a few weeks. That way as you start to introduce substitutes for your old favourite foods, you are hanging out for them, they taste great and are a treat. If you go straight to paleo-friendly equivalents straight away they pale in comparison - especially Paleo baking with almond and coconut flour. It does the job, but you can't compare it to regular baking, pancakes, etc.

Yeah, I did that by accident. By the time I made the Paleo pancakes I was doing cartwheels about how good they tasted.

The health store hippie that works where I buy the Coconut Flour said it takes three months for your taste buds to switch to the new diet. And the Whole9 crowd say that this week in the challenge is where your mind starts sabotaging your efforts, as they say the brain doesn't like being deprived of something and sugar is basically an addiction.

I buy into some of that, I've been having utterly bizarre dreams about food and huge cravings for sweet foods. I get past it but it's not fun.

So I'm half way through today, I've been hitting all my targets and have only missed five points (a missed workout) from all the available points in the challenge. I'm also on target for the most xFit sessions in a month, and today is only day I'm feeling sore (last two workouts had backsquats and deadlifts)

I'm completely confident that I will finish the second half. Weight is 80.5kg, so the loss has settled down, but tantalizing close to my goal. Clothes are much looser and have these weird lines on my stomach, think they are called abs.

Haha. Nice work on the progress.

Have you noticed that you don't go down hardly any of the supermarket aisles now? It's weird mainly just sticking to the meat and produce sections - which are usually around the outskirts.

Only have to go down an aisle for Coconut Oil, anything else is not food related. Been transitioning to markets and butchers, just easier and better food.

I pretty much cook everything in it, eggs, meat, whatever. Nice and sweet, and a healthy fat.

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Eleven days left, it's actually starting to fly by. Energy levels have improved, am feeling pretty good. Have never been able to maintain this amount of xFit sessions per week, and absolutely no stiffness or sore muscles.

Getting through the workouts OK (as long as they don't have burpees, sigh, another potentially 90 this evening).

Found a couple of new recipes this week, mainly for snacks and dinners. Variety is helping, and the fruit is helping with the cravings.

I expect sometime this week to hit my weight loss goal, so starting to think about what the next one will be. I suspect a sprint goal of 78kg.

Is there anything you are really missing? Sauces? Deep fried something? A filthy (yet undeniably delicious) pie?

Sounds like you will have earned it after those gnarly workouts.

Had been meaning to ask. How is the new gym compared to your Kapiti coast crew?

I'm missing eating without thinking, more than anything specific. Over the past few weeks I've missed Pizza, lollies, chocolate, coke zero but mainly just grabbing something if I felt like it. Eight days to go :)

But it does show that I ate plenty of empty calories, pretty much unconsciously. So that's a good lesson, and I've picked up some veges that I didn't know I liked and some healthy meals and snacks to continue on with past the challenge.

The new gym is very good, they are extremely detailed orientated. It was the second Crossfit gym opened in NZ (by a few months) so the're pretty dialed into to what offer. I can't get away with my bad habits, so always use the hook grip now. The hour is packed, quite often with two exercises working to a 1rep max and then a WOD.

Starting to get to know people now, so it's getting part of that community feel that I had in Kapiti.

So I like it. The only thing I don't like is they have a skunkworks team of elites that is always training there. Most of them are OK, but a few of them are dicks and pretty inconsiderate with taking up space when a WOD class is going on. Not a huge issue though, helps to practice concentration with distraction.

3 weeks in and I'm down to 96.6kg. I think I was 99.4kg last time so just under 3kg. I'm pretty chuffed with that.

Although I don't think my diet is as restricted as Kirwan's I'm not really missing anything ... occasionally I'll feel like chocolate but I'm pretty much used to not having it now. I could take of leave deep fried food and pies so that's no problem and I've swapped stir fry sauces for greggs/masterfoods herbs type products which gives me enough flavour.

I'm going to keep going for another two weeks and then I'm going to be heading up the Island to stay with friends so I'll start easing some carbs back in and evaluate what's happening.

Week three completed, weight loss now 3.7 and I'm sitting at 79.5kg.

WODs are starting to improve, cardio is still not great but it's getting better finally.

One of them was 150 wall balls and 90 double unders (and muscle ups, but I still can't do those) in 12mins. Improved from 37 double unders to 79 from last year.

Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Five days to go on the challenge now. The weekend was tough, lots of kids activities with a bit of junk food for them. So lots of being handed half finished ice creams, etc Managed not to crack though.

Hit 4kgs of weight loss for the month now, might make it to 4.5kg by the end of the week we'll see. Pretty happy with that, 1.2kg to my sprint goal of 78kg.

All downhill from here, it's easy keeping the diet clean during the week. The difficulty I have now is remembering to eat and hour before xFit so I have energy for the WODs.

Week days are easy Kirwan. Like you, with kids the weekend can be a struggle.

Do you train weekends?

I dont lift in the weekends so typically eat less anyway then so I just try keep portion sizes down and make good food choices etc based on whats available. It's not perfect but not gonna ruin my progress either.

The oats article was a good little read http://www.marksdailyapple.com/are-oats-healthy/#axzz2uMRHVKMr

I don't necessarily need them but I like my oats and they contribute to my macro nutrient requirements very well right now.
