By my count we have conceded 5 set piece tries.

3 lineout drives and two to the backs from scrums.

Not good enough from both sides though, don’t think either deserve to win

We made enough tackles for the season in our game over Of Plenty.

Do we need one more try for the second bonus point for 8 tries?

Fuck this has been a pathetic, limp dicked, gutless second half from Northland. Just totally embarrassing.

Only Northland could turn a 14 point lead into a 14 point deficit.

In case there is anyone relying on us to keep them updated on the score it is Hawkes Bay 55 - 41 Northland with still another four minutes to suffer

A 51 all draw might have been a fairer result.

    Hard luck Northland fans.

I’m still struggling to comprehend that second half.

Sure our first half wasn’t perfect, defense was leaky but at least we played rugby.

Second half was spent missing tackles, throwing passes behind the man and giving away penalties.
For me summed up by dumbarse Pryor getting sin binned the very next play after a team warning for giving away penalties. Yep, the very next play.

Goodbye season. We might scrape into the semis, but that’ll be our lot as usual. We are just way too inconsistent to be a serious threat in the competition.

Some will view this as being a bit harsh or negative, but fucking hell, it’s the same shit different year.

I will always support the Taniwha but bloody hell they frustrate the hell out of me!!!

Gregory needs to be at 12, Hohaia is such a weak point.

The only thing worse than us tonight was the ref - think he set the tone early with those 2 bad penalty calls leading to tries. You know they're wrong when Ian Smith is saying so - HBs version of Ian Jones. Add to that the phantom penalties that led to a yellow card and a try from a Wayne Barnes like miss on the forward pass and HB have a 4 try bonus point courtesy of the work experience ref. Even little things like calling a kick not 10 when it so clearly did Grant Nisbet could see it.

Mikaele Tu'u definitely deserved the DM points, was such a beast. Northland should've attacked Mason Emersons wing a lot more, it was clear they had identified him as the weak point and they exploited it to good effect in the first half.

    Well fuck.

How can you concede that many and expect to be a contender.

I thought we might lose that one, but not like that.

Thought that with a few injuries we looked short on the bench. We missed Matich, Robinson, Wright and Jacobsen.

Missed tackles, lineout defence, and discipline. Shit.

@chiefy07 I agree. So far I think Gregory has been the find in the backs. Runs good lines and accurate/ physical on defence. He would add creativity at 2nd.

    Firstly congratulations to the Magpies..!
In all my time following the Taniwha this loss would be one of the hardest ones to take simply because of the giagantic switch off after the halftime break.
I will get this one out of the way,the official did not help but he was nowhere near the main reason for such a capitulation in the 2nd half but I did feel he gave the player on the ground far too much time holding on after being tackled .

If you think back to before the Magpies scored their 2nd try Ranger was unjustly penalised for being late to the tackled player to which all the commentary team disagreed with and there were other examples during the game not to mention a Hawkes Bay player that lay in the tackle are while the ball was trying to be freed late in the match, and believe you me he was making no attempt to move.
All you ask for is consistency in that area.

On saying all that there were several missed one on one tackles that were nothing short of disgraceful, and what made things worse was once the Magpies got in behind us ,we infringed giving the hosts the opportunity to kick to the corner.
The indiscipline was a real killer, when you have lost the referee, what part of don’t infringing don’t you understand..?
The bench I also thought was a real disappointment, they did not offer a thing,Mc Namara tried his best, but he’s no Matich..!

A couple of real turning points for me.
The loss of Matich was huge, he makes a ton of tackles not to mention his clean outs.
The other thing that did my head,if you wanted create your own piece of history a lone shot at penalty goal to stretch the lead out to 10 points was never going to be enough..!,we should have kicked to the corner,if you miss out at least you stay on attack.

I don’t really get to upset about All Black losses or even Blues losses because that’s a common occurrence, but this one hurts..!,
Unfortunately for all of our improvements WE CANT WIN AWAY FROM HOME WHEN IT COUNTS..!..I personally thought there was an opportunity to create history by getting our first win in Napier under the ITM/Mitre 10 concept that’s been running since 2006.
Unfortunately we are looking like we are history for 2018,because I really can’t see us beating Counties Manukau or BOP away..only hope is a victory over Waikato at home, pick some bonus points and hope some other results go our way

@steven-harris agree with all that bar the call to take the penalty kick at goal...at that point in the game, I felt that was the smartest decision, and with the way the rest of that half played out, you could say it was the only smart decision made in the 2nd half.

Lack of smarts and having no feel whatsoever for the ref is a big problem.

Just because you are at the breakdown with all rights, if the ref calls hands off, you do actually need to listen.

This game was there for the taking, and the winner took a huge step towards a home semi final, alas it wasnt us.

The way the table is looking, we may still be sitting in the same place come the end of the weekend, so still have a realistic chance of making the top 4, but the way that 2nd spell and large parts of the first went, we will bow out in the 1st semi, again.
