A great Counties team. It should have had more All Blacks, only had 2 with Jonah the only regular. All time greats in that Counties team. A great crowd on the embankment. I was there with Family on the grass bank on the Grandstand side.

What's the best pakeha winger pairing in provincial history? Wright and Kirwan?

Wilson/Cooke was pretty good too. This channel has plenty of Otago stuff...

@mariner4life What is crazy is that as soon as the ball left Bachops hands I could remember that try clearly - I probably can't remember single AB tries this year.

@bovidae some of his work with those little kicks was magic, literally had the ball on a string.

Was it him or Cully that did the 'bounce pass' to the other for a try?

how the hell did we get Goldie, Cullen and Lomu in the team at the same time? That's not fair!

And then Osbourne and Umaga at the same time as well.

Yet somehow we wound up with Caleb Ralph on the wing at times when all those guys bar Osborne were playing ...

@nepia if you hadnt watched him play and looking at his record alone you'd not likely have too many issues with him....126 games for the Crusaders during thier long period of dominance with 290 points (I assume) almost 60 tries, 14 tests, 9 tries (not a bad strike rate)

Yeah, definitely, and he had some good matches at centre for NZ Maori as well - it's when you put him in comparison to all those others listed it's a bit one of these things is not like the other.

according to Wiki he didnt get a try for the Maori, not that this is always a measure.

He got an awesome try (or set up one) against the Wallabies but Mark Lawerance pulled it back for some (maybe dodgy) reason.

not to forget Adrian Cashmore who while he wasn't a bad player should not have kept Oz out of the side.

Don't get me started on Hart's fuckwittedness in 99.

Personally I think Hart was more destructive of the AB's than Mitchell/Deans

Did he really keep Oz out of the side? He only played two tests as a replacement.

Maybe I should change the thread title to 'Let's watch Canterbury get beaten' 😉

It would be a very short thread

If you haven't discovered the excellent FB page NPC Rugby History (https://www.facebook.com/npcrugby/) or don't FB at all you are missing some great old clips the remind you of the difference between old school rugby and the current pro game.

I had to make this thread just to post this...

Fats, Lomu, Jim Coe, Errol Brain, a young (and thin) looking Merts for the losing side and some fine rucking.

    jeez Mehrts made a tackle
