@bovidae some of his work with those little kicks was magic, literally had the ball on a string.

Was it him or Cully that did the 'bounce pass' to the other for a try?

how the hell did we get Goldie, Cullen and Lomu in the team at the same time? That's not fair!

And then Osbourne and Umaga at the same time as well.

Yet somehow we wound up with Caleb Ralph on the wing at times when all those guys bar Osborne were playing ...

@nepia if you hadnt watched him play and looking at his record alone you'd not likely have too many issues with him....126 games for the Crusaders during thier long period of dominance with 290 points (I assume) almost 60 tries, 14 tests, 9 tries (not a bad strike rate)

Yeah, definitely, and he had some good matches at centre for NZ Maori as well - it's when you put him in comparison to all those others listed it's a bit one of these things is not like the other.

according to Wiki he didnt get a try for the Maori, not that this is always a measure.

He got an awesome try (or set up one) against the Wallabies but Mark Lawerance pulled it back for some (maybe dodgy) reason.

not to forget Adrian Cashmore who while he wasn't a bad player should not have kept Oz out of the side.

Don't get me started on Hart's fuckwittedness in 99.

Personally I think Hart was more destructive of the AB's than Mitchell/Deans

Did he really keep Oz out of the side? He only played two tests as a replacement.

Maybe I should change the thread title to 'Let's watch Canterbury get beaten' 😉

It would be a very short thread

If you haven't discovered the excellent FB page NPC Rugby History (https://www.facebook.com/npcrugby/) or don't FB at all you are missing some great old clips the remind you of the difference between old school rugby and the current pro game.

I had to make this thread just to post this...

Fats, Lomu, Jim Coe, Errol Brain, a young (and thin) looking Merts for the losing side and some fine rucking.

    jeez Mehrts made a tackle

    1982: Canterbury 16 Wellington 12
"That was the famous try by Wayne Smith when he ran at that curious angle. He ran and Paul Quinn chased him. Quinn was a former Canterbury player and Wellington captain so there was quite a bit on it but to no avail and they took the shield. That was one of the great ones."

I will always remember that try. Up to that point I had paid no attention to rugby, but for some reason I was listening to the commentary on the transistor while I was playing in the back yard. I dont remember his exact words but the commentator's excitement as Smith kept running has stayed with me. Couldn't wait to watch the game on telly later that day. I have been a rugby tragic ever since.

Bastard scored in Bernie's corner. I'm pretty sure was there

@canefan red and black run through my genes but I used to love watching Bernie Fraser and grew up as a kid loving Grant Batty - wonder if he was smaller than DMac.

IIRC Smith, a good Putaruru man, runs down the left flank so that would be Bernie's corner on attack but marked by Wilson on defence.

Keith Quinn: "Away to Wayne Smith! ... A strong run by Wayne Smith! ... Aaaand a brilliant try to Wayne Smith!"
