Kiwi girls defeated Japan in a penalty shootout to reach the semis. First time any NZ team has progressed this far. Anna Leat (goalie) saved a penalty, kicked the winner, and got player of the match. Unfortunately they get to face Spain in the semi, but top effort!

I switched the channel over this morning to see the penalty shootout. NZ did well to score both goals in the match when you look at the possession Japan had. Well done them!

I had to feel sorry for the Japanese captain in the post-match interviews. She was visibly upset and struggling to keep her composure. It's in these situations you realise they are only kids.

@booboo The other side of the draw still to play their quarters. Canada v Germany, and Mexico v Ghana.

Mexico beat Ghana, and Canada beat Germany in the other quarters. So semis are:

    NZ vs Spain
    Mexico vs Canada

This seems the best place to post this:

The Football Ferns have booked their spot in next year's World Cup, beating Fiji 8-0 to win the Oceania Women's Nations Cup in New Caledonia.

The Ferns finished the tournament with five wins from five, maintaining their unbeaten record against Pacific Island opposition, which never looked like being threatened.

As well as qualifying them for the World Cup in France next June, the win earns them a ticket to the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

Qualifications seems to have been pretty easy; the World Cup won't be, but always a great opportunity to play against the best!

@booboo The problem in the past for the Football Ferns is that they can't score enough goals against the better quality teams at the marquee tournaments (WC, Olympics). That means they don't advance past the group stage. If they can put the ball into the back of the net they are a chance.

First time any NZ football team made semis, first podium finish. Outstanding effort, and all jokes aside, I hope they are recognised at the Halberg awards.

NZ did lose to the eventual winners (Spain) in their SF.

@Mokey I think they will win the team of the year and the overall Halberg. The ABs won't win, Team NZ aren't a factor this year, and it's not an Olympic year either.

@bovidae Pretty stiff competition from the Black Fern 7s who had an excellent year and a gold medal at the CGs.

But you could also make a case for the men's sevens. Both teams won the CG and WC so it would be hard to split them.

The All Whites won it all in 2010 when they didn't even get out of the group. The U17s will be nominated and given the worldwide appeal of football I think they will do the same.

    And seriously: it's Under 17.

Struggling for a nomination for me. Not detracting from them, awesome effort, and it IS soccer, but 3rd in an Age Grade tourny, and a very young age grade, shouldn't get you a Halberg.
