I don't get the Harrison/Barnes hate at all. Have absolutely no problem with them as a team. They talk a bit of shit, but name me a commentary team that doesn't. Harrison cheerleads a bit for England, but so what? No more than any other team.
Safa commentators are probably the most balanced. Irish are the least.
I think the Irish ones work on the basis that no one else other than Irish viewers are listening as normally other commentators from other countries cover the broadcast. So when the occasional match crops up on shared broadcast they sound just awful. The worst pair being Ryle Nugent and ex-international, Donal Lenihan, who is rank.

@derm-mccrum to be fair, the first time I heard them I was blown away (tour vs Aus this year) as they just constently were calling for penalties / YC in their favour. Almost at every breakdown.
Then I didn't think they were so bad vs us. Yet others on here do. Maybe I got used to them!

Oh don't worry, I thought the Aussies commentators were equally as bad. The Fiddle-dee-dee potatoes remark from one guy was just embarrassing. For him. I just laughed.

Really? All bloody Harrison can say is” and here is x player doing what he does so well”. Rinse, repeat ad nauseum.

Beats the shit out of Justin Marshall or Scott Stevenson in my view. Each to their own.

Luckily I don’t have to listen to those two swabs too often. I was watching the highlights of an old early 90s game yesterday that was commentated by Nigel Starmer-Smith who, IMO was not fit to lace Bill McClaren’s drinks but by fuck he was a lot better than most of today’s blowhards.

And Barnes changes his mind more than my missus

Yes, he’s like the BBC weather forecast. Eventually correctly predicts rain 10 minutes after it starts pissing down after calling sunshine for the previous 3 days.

That's who we got in Aus for the AB test. They were hilariously bad!
Barnes is just an awful broadcaster. He sounds like it's a chore to be there. He's sour. And as stated, changes his mind an awful lot over what is a good idea or not. Usually depending on the outcome.

We (NZ) seem alternate between Sky UK and the BBC, whoever has the rights. I find Butler and Davies more annoying than Harrison and Barnes. Sometimes we don't get to hear the sideline/studio comments, which is probably a good thing.
What everyone else has said about the Irish comms.
Makes me appreciate Nisbo more, even with his faults (e.g. incorrectly identifying players).

It’s not really BBC anymore. RTE in Ireland had the rights to the NZ match. Channel Four now has the Ireland match rights in the UK - they didn’t bother second commentating - just did the preview and halftime stuff. Don’t know which studio version you got in NZ or maybe you localized that.

In the broadcasts we get, it seems to be Butler/Davies for the Welsh home games and Harrison/Barnes in the England home games. I could be wrong with who works for which TV network now.
Sometimes they would throw it over to a sideline commentator and we'd only get silence.
